997 Intercooler on a 996TT
997 Intercooler on a 996TT
There is a guy selling OEM 997TT intercoolers and claims that they will fit the 996TT and that they are bigger. Does anyone know for sure if his claims are true? Are they X50/GT2 equivalent or are they bigger?
I'm also interested in the comparison and possible fitting. Todd from EVO says they are pretty much the same as our X50/GT2 versions (...which on the other hand are pretty much the same as the stock IC's): https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ad.php?t=56055
I doubt the difference is noticeable but might still be a nice upgrade IF someone has an extra set lying around!

Do they have the same part numbers?
If not, how do we know they are not better than stock (or rather any aftermarket IC for that matter?) Who has done any real world testing? I have always wanted to know the truth about this, but not aware of any IAT tests on the road at all.
On another front, if they fitted them on the 997TT and 997GT2 and they are getting such amazing performance with little mods such as an ECU tune, they must be somewhat good.

Not the same part numbers....one has the 996 and the other the 997.I wont say they are useless, but I will say that I went thru 3 sets on my car, the first were the stock 996 TT inter coolers. They work for stock, then I upgraded the turbos on my car went with a set of k24's I then later upgraded to a set of GT2 inter coolers and there was no real improvement, then I went with a set of aftermarket IC and the car woke up...now when I am saying woke up , I am talking about HOT days, thats when you will be glad you have a set of good coolers.I upgraded the turbos once again an the aftermarket are working well. I say if you can do the swap and can get them cheap then go for it and try them, but if you have to pay someone to do the swap, then its NOT worth the money.....IMHO.
True.

I needed them since the 996 gt2 did not fit onto my 996 to 997 conversion
Thanks for the info that's what I thought. I would then assume that these intercoolers are more developped than the old ones, either through more efficient design or more appropriate size or both. A
I did not know that you can have really HOT days in Canada! Trust me I know about heat quite a bit
Did you ONLY did the intercooler upgrade when you noticed the car waking up, and if so, do you have any data from that before and after or is it butt dyno?

Old thread-- NOTE -- while the 996 GT2 intercooler and the 997 TT Intercoolers are the same size-- they are NOT AN INTERCHANGEABLE FIT. Considerable modification is needed to be made to fit. Definately not worth the trouble-even if they cost you nothing!
Wanted to update this thread in case the search engine hits it. You can run 997 intercoolers on the 996 but you will need to swap your lower 996 endtanks onto the 997 cores for a direct fit. Its fairly straightforward and takes about an hour. Just peel back the metal tabs with a small flatblade, remove 997 tank, install 996 tank, bend tabs back down, pressure check and you're on your way. I found a set of 997 ICs for like 75 bucks and did the swap. Not a bad price if you are looking to do a small, 500-ish hp intercooler upgrade, IMO.
