Indicator Failure

Today, I go an Indicator Failure related to Oil Pressure. Prior to this I noticed that the the Oil Pressure gauge needle was moving up and down very erratically. The level of Oil is no problem. What could this be? It could be wiring as the road is very uneven here especially since I upgraded my suspension.

Sounds like the Oil Pressure Sender. They have been a problem here on the forum.

If I can chime in, the oil pressure sender unit has two terminals - one with variable resistance to indicate the needle's position. The other terminal is a yes/no you have pressure which drives the idiot light on the dash. If you're having trouble with both, it may be a real issue. Fingers crossed for you that it's just the sending unit which costs about $75 and maybe 1-2 hours labor to install.

Worst case would be oil pump failure but I'm told that's extremely unlikely - almost unheard of. Or could be the oil pressure release valves or something floating around in the oil that's gumming it up on occasion.

Fingers crossed for you that it's the simple cause of the sending unit!

Thanks guys. It has to be the Oil pressure sender unit and the terminal that indicate the needle's position as the needle is moving eratically and the car is still running after driving home and the drive is about 20 miles.

How easy is it to check the wiring? Can some give me the location of the Oil Sender unit as well as part number? Thanks in advance.

That just happened to me. Was the sending unit. Replaced under warranty.

Could someone post a part number and perhaps a photo/howto?

TIA. I may have the same issue. I get an error.....but on turning the car off and running it, it went away. No amount of pushing the car triggers it..so I have to assume it is a bad or going bad sender.....

Do you have to dump the car's oil to do the switch?...etc.
