Considering a 01/02 turbo, suggestions?
I've had my evo for about 3 years no, my incomes scaled up and I'm really looking to get something new. My dilema is that there really isnt anything new thats a good solid upgrade, at an affordable price.
The GTR is nice, but since nissan decided to only make 1500 of them supply and demand has made MSRP an absolute joke. I'm really not interested in vettes, which seems to be the only other alternative.
I drove a 03 X50 996 turbo earlier this year and just loved it.. it just kicks ***.. seems to be a great daily driver.. awesome power, great potential with light mods..
My problem is that paying 60k+ for a low miles later year 996 turbo is a bit out of range. Id rather try and stay in the high 40s and be patient, and try to find a good deal.. thankfully prices seem to be comming down. Ive read all over 6speed online and tried to get an idea of what can break.. what kind of holy s**t catastrophes can occur leaving you with a 5k+ repair bill.. the only thing so far seems to be transmission related issues. Ive seen a few threads about alternator failures and one about a radiator pipe leak that required dropping the motor out.. thats a little daunting, but so far that seems it.
I'm very mechanically adept having done several motorswaps, installs and clutches on evos, so I expect most light work to simply be cost of parts..
does anyone else have any suggestions as to likely items to fail?
I know it offends and bugs some people that some of us outside of the porsche clique would like to get into one and probobly dont have the $$ to "do it right", but there really arent alot of cars between the $20k-$30k range and the "good" used 996 turbo range at 55k+.
Actually imo, there arent any. I'm tired of my car and ready to upgrade.
Thoughts?

Go for it. You should be able to find a nice one in the high 40's with around 50k miles or so. I've had no major repair issues, other than replacing a clutch ($3000?). They are very reliable and fun to drive. No complaints - I've had mine for two years so far.
I am also looking and I think thier are allot of 996TT owners that are willing to bargain. You should have no problem finding a great car maybe with a few nice mods for 45K. If you like since we are both looking PM me If I see something that I pass on you may like it and vis versa.

Ihatemitsu,
I'm not offended or bugged by you trying to get into a Porsche. Do what you can with what you have to make it work. Good luck with your search.

Buy a higher miles car , those will be much lower in value and are exactly the same as a car with low miles. People in the US have a cliche that high mile cars are worth less so they sell them cheaper as their European counterpart is completly the opposite , down there cars have a lot more miles.
My car has 50,000 miles an runs like a champ , If clutch is a concearn I saw the OEM kit from Suncoast for $550 and if you can do the labor then you are good to go
Enjoy

Seems a little high to me depending on the options. For comparison, I am looking for a 04/05 turbo cab and those seem to be selling in the low to mid 70's. I think you should be able to get the price down.
The only reason millage would scare me off is the unusually - compared to other lower priced cars - expensive parts. For example, my evos trans I expect it to start having some issues around 70-80k, but its only 2k for a rebuild.. wont be so lucky with the 996. The wear and tear on the car by 50-70k could be worrisome but I dont really see alot of posts from people in that millage range.
How much of a gambling man are you? You may be totally lucky and have no expenses other than typical maintenance. Conversly you could be out 20k+ in the blink of an eye. No one here is going to guarantee you'll be ok. You may want to pay more and get a CPO car or one with a repair coverage contract so you don't have any surprises.
