Factory Short Shifter Part Number and Best Price for Part?
IIRC....there's DIY instructions on RennTech. The main thing is finding the screws holding down the center console...some are in hidden locations...once the console is off, there are some nuts holding the shifter in place, and you have to disconnect the two shift cables by backing off a spring loaded mechanism on the cable....put on the jig that holds the shifter in neutral and mark your threads to ensure you get them back in the same positon....then button it back up. Probably a 1.5 hour job for someone who's never done it just because you're being super careful....the DIY should have some pictures which makes it easy....it's really not a complex job. Try a search on Rennlist, RennTech, and 6 Speed...one of them will have a DIY with pictures.
That's because I bought it from SunSET not SunCOAST. Do a google search on Sunset Porsche, they're in Oregon....I always talk to Jeff Clark in Porsche parts. I bought my shifter about 5 months ago and that's what I paid for it then. There's some shipping charges too, but they're the standard UPS rates.
I'm not advocating one vendor over another...just telling you the price I paid for it. I know a lot of folks buy from Suncoast too...they're in Florida. I guess if you're on the west coast, shipping might be cheaper from Oregon that Florida.

When you do the install - I found it one step easier to also remove the center console that holds the CD's and batwing, etc. Put your seats all the back and lay the seat backs all the way down flat. Take your time - should take no more than 1 hour
I think you will be really surprised.
I had my car in the shop a few weeks back and drove a Cayman s loaner.
After about 2 days with that shifter - I felt like I needed something different.
Sure enough the 997 is much smoother than the stock 996TT and I actually find my shifting faster with the 997 kit than with the B&M short shift set up.

Have B&M now, was on car when I got it. very notchy, I'll miss third almost every time shifting reasonably aggressive. Drove a 996tt with a 997TT shifter, thats why I want one...don't care about short throw, just want clean smooth shifting.
I had the B&M in my car and I was actualy missing gates between 3rd and 2nd at times both on and off track. I've swapped to the 997 OEM shifter and like it much better. It is smooth with no notchy feel to it at all. The one issue I have is that my first gear has always been a little hard to engage (we think there is a tranny rebuild in my future) and the OEM shifter makes it more abrupt when I get to the bad spot on the main shaft/first gear.
I'd never go back to the B&M... My next move would be to the Porsche Motorsports GT3 Cupcar shifter/cable kit, which runs about $1000.

The GT3 Cupcar shifter is a "Porsche Rennsport" (Their motorsport division) part and must be ordered thru an authorized Porsche Rennsport dealer. It is significantly more expensive (About $1000) and come with all new cables and is as smooth in action as the new 997 Stock shifter, but with extremely SHORT throws. Shorter than the B&M... So you get the best of both the SSK setups and stock like silky smooth action.
Steve, I don't think the unit in the 997GT3RS is the same as the OEM shifter being offered for $160-180.

SuncoastSteve, what about the Cupcar? Matt Callahan had a much shorter throw on the setup he had installed by an INDY at the track. This kit was a Motorsport part and included the shifter and cables, all hardware, housing, whole bit, and the throws were much shorter... Maybe it's the SSK with the cupcar cables??? I was told by the INDY that it was a Rennsport partnumber for the kit.
