Factory Short Shifter Part Number and Best Price for Part?
You, too. Did you get it installed?, and how do you like it?
SuncoastSteve, what about the Cupcar? Matt Callahan had a much shorter throw on the setup he had installed by an INDY at the track. This kit was a Motorsport part and included the shifter and cables, all hardware, housing, whole bit, and the throws were much shorter... Maybe it's the SSK with the cupcar cables??? I was told by the INDY that it was a Rennsport partnumber for the kit.

I did notice that the last cup car I saw had a standard 997 shift **** in it though!
997tt shifter, $176 with shipping from Sunset shipped to my door. I should have it before the weekend. I will try to get it on as soon as I can and post my opinion.
I've had the B and M in my other 996 and \went to the 997...and just the other day drove another TT with a SSK in it, and can honestly say that I prefer the feel and smoothness of the 997. Opinion is based on honest assessment...not just because I bought it and am trying to justify the decision. It's smoother and feels more sure insofar as gear selection goes. Hell of a lot cheaper, and is a direct fit with no part destruction, manipulation or maneuvering involved. Dogone good value for the money.

+1
Thats why I bought mine. After driving a 996tt with a 997 shifter, I was sold, had to order one. My B&M will be for sale soon. I"ll deal with the insignificant "extra throw" for the smoothness and slick shifting of the 997 shifter.
Good thread. I have the B&M and I do like it but agree that it can feel a bit notchy, tough to go into 1st sometimes (don't know if that could be improved) and I take my time getting into 2nd for obvious reasons!
I am considering the 997 shifter (standard), however, it seems to reason that the 997 SSK (factory) should be the hot ticket! I'm assuming it's a whole assembly for the price difference and not just a 'kit' like the B&M is/was? I hope so for twice the price! (damn Porsche tax)

997 shifter installed. Too crappy out for a test ride, but first impressions in the garage and driveway are MUCH smoother. Will report back as soon as I get a road test.
Oh btw, it took about an hour, would have been less, if I could have found the screw under the coin tray sooner!!!
Super easy install, remove center console, 2 cable clips that hold cables to plastic housing and 2 cable clamps that hold cables to shifter, remove 4 nuts, install new one in reverse order. 997 shifter comes with the plastic housing intact.
B&M short shifter for sale with the plastic housing!!!

It's amazing how many P car folks are going to this 997 shifter...a lot of folks who are trying to make up their minds about which way to go will be pulled one way or another by the B and M versus the 997 shifter crowds....but the bottom line is that those of us who have had both usually end up endorsing the 997 flavor over the B & M. What I find I like best is the more positive gear selection on the quick downshifts. With my B and M, I'd have a tendency to hit the 5th to 2nd track more often. Call it operator error or whatever you choose, but the fact remains that with the 997 shifter, I don't encounter that problem. Add in the price and ease of installation, and you have a pretty much unbeatable combo.

I agree 100%. I found it very difficult to achieve a consistant 2nd to 3rd shift and all shifts were notchy, almost too close. The 997 seems to be BETWEEN to stock 996 shifter and the B&M short throw. I've driven a couple now and know it's what I want, even thought I haven't gotten to drive mine yet!
and my SM said he give me a 997 shifter for $50 bucks that they just pulled out of a new car.
ttboost, Good work. We wanna hear how you like it. This link was posted earlier in this thread. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...ic=3424&hl=ssk Do you think I should get this adjustment tool for my 997 shifter installation this weekend?
What tool? Link doesn't work? The new 997 shifter came with an "alignment tool" which is a green plastic piece that keeps the shifter in the center position so the cables are aligned perfectly making the install a snap.
