How good is tiptronic on the TT?
I never ever thought I would buy a tip
But after driving several TT's before purchase it took a while to dawn on me that this was the right choice and with circa 520HP
letting it change it up on rev limiter automatically on manual mode when you floor it is pretty damn mind blowing.

The TIP in manual mode offers some challenge, but ultimately the car prevents you from screwing up. Not so in a manual. Depends on how closely you want to "drive" the car vs. being "driven". I would never, if I had the choice, drive a TIP Porsche.
After driving a TT with a 6speed manual, I switched to a newer (02) TT with a tiptronic and I didn't regret it.
No matter what other people on this board say, ...it definitely takes a VERY good driver, to beat a TT with tiptronic in direct comparism.

Marx is right on this. A few weeks ago I was at VIR doing a HPDC and had to work very hard to get by a tip TT. My next TT will be a tip due to driving ease in traffic. We have lots of that in D.C.
I'm not implying that I'm a good driver. I was just more committed or focused than the other driver.

A tip would definitely make life easier with a TT because you can forget about the stupid first gear. You can just stomp on it at any stop light without having to prepare yourself for the launch.
However, while the tip makes driving easier, it also makes me feel disengaged from the car, especially wrt the engine rpm. I'm also prone to lose track of which gear I'm in while driving a tip. Have to constantly look at the gear indicator to keep track.
Most important, I miss the downshifts (heel-n-toe, engine-brake) in a manual when I'm driving a tip.
I wish they can make first gear a tip and the rest manual with a clutch. That'd be the best compromise for traffic and steep hills.
EDIT: actually I like the 1st gear alot now after getting a new tranny.

Tips change gear too quickly before the revs mount up so that feeling of acceleration just aint the same as a manual also it's very easy to speed in a tip as it changes so smoothly ..you just don't realise how fast you are going. The manual gets my vote pref with a short shifter

Tiptronic is gay. Why would you $120k+ on a high performance sports car and have an automatic transmission? Taking the clutch shifting out of the equation completely defeats the purpose of having a sports car. The only alternative that comes close to being worth a change is a sequential manual gearbox.
Tiptronic is for people who want to own Porsches and dont know how to drive a manual properly, or b/c the only way they could convince their wife to let them spend that much on a car was to say, "look honey, you can drive it too!"
