First thing I'll have to admit is that I don't own a Turbo or a GT2. But that's what brings me to this question. I claim that any turbo charged car will have some turbo lag. But some folks who commented on my blog, said that the 996 and later Porsches have zero lag. So is it true?

I own a Turbo Subaru and there's definitely lag there. That's what got me thinking along these lines in the first place.

 

IMO, there will be lag with any Turbo car, that is just the nature of the technology. The 996TT has so much torque that the lag is not that noticeable over other cars.

had a 76t lots of lag did some modding and all but lost the lag... the next was am 86 which had some lag ,got rid of most of that with a larger intercoller and lots of other mods, now comes the 01 with all the mods i doubt that i have any lag, but will try to remember test for it next time i drive it.. in a week os so i hope

 

AKAIK, lag is directly proportional to the time it takes to build up the appropriate (back) pressure to turn the turbos. This is mitigated by the size of the turbos, the type of turbos (e.g., ZC), the length of the system, etc. So with the right set-up, lag is almost transparent....of course I used to own a K27 930..and the lag was measured in days..LOL

 

Well, coming from NA cars to a Turbo car, there is A LOT of lag. I have GT28's which are supposed to be almost lag free, but nothing much happens until 3K rpms. When you floor a big displacement NA car at 1500 rpms, it just gets up and goes...

It is to be expected. When I drove my cousins 964T, it felt like an eternity until the car would build boost. You have to drive the car at 3K+ all the time or you wouldn't have anything. The 996 is a little different as in it can get out of its way at low rpms and just plain RIP at high(er) rpms.

 

My 996TT exhibits almost no noticable lag at ALL... I've got several memebrs who've driven the car and would comment to this fact...

I have a Dodge cummins 3500 series diesel... it has TONS of lag.

I owned an 86 930 with a K29, my lag was measured in weeks!!!

All turbo cars have lag. I have owned and driven many different types. These twin turbo cars have less lag. For example, the old 930's would not kick in till nearly 4000 rpm like most single turbo cars and when they did you had better be going in a straight line because your hp went from 200 to 300 plus in a fraction of a second

My current setup I don't feel lag above 2000 rpm. I start boosting at around 2k and it builds up from there and feels like a big block car. if the car had one big single turbo it would feel like the old cars or like a supra. The curves below show how the twin turbos spool up faster and in this case virtually no lag will be felt except way below 2k rpm, but the supra will have tons of lag below 4000 - 4500 rpm even though it has much more power.

The stock x50 cars are the worst! My upgraded setup is much much better but still has lag. Now my wifes little a4 is almost lag free! Of course the show is over around 5k though

 

Funny you mention this....The only TT I've driven was a 996 X50 that I took out for a test drive and I definitely felt significant lag. So, not all TT's are as bad? Why is this? I have been deciding if I just want to go for a 997S as opposed to a TT for this reason. The lag feels weird, BUT I'm sure I could get used to it!

 

larger turbos and stock tuning means more lag. But after driving a 996tt hard, you won't want a 997S

 

Ahhh, got it! So I've heard about the S/TT comparison!!! So a GT3 has no lag at all? Hmmmmmm!!
