Has anyone replaced an alternator on a 996tt yet?

Checked the battery at autozone, but they claim it is good and holding charge. I definitely need to address something in the charging system. I have a feeling it will be the most expensive part: the alternator. Has anyone needed to replace one yet? How bad is the labor? Should I check anything else to make sure its not the culprit (i.e. worn belt, bad tensioner, etc) or is that unlikely?

My local installer hasnt seen the car yet, but says it is VERY unlikely it is the alternator since he has never heard of one going bad on these cars. Any suggestions would help at this point. Thank you.

Just did it. I have under 40k miles. Red Top battery was fine...

I did the polyrib (fixed from timing belt earlier..sorry: JB) belt at the same time since it was free labor at that point.

I think the part, new, was 7-800...labor was a few hours. I used a shop down here called "Foreign Affairs" as it was recommended by several people to me. No issues.

thanks for the info! I can get a new alternator for roughly 300. How much is the timing belt? how long is a timing belt supposed to last on these cars (i think audis last like 80Kish miles)? Any ideas on intervals for a waterpump? I'm trying to figure out what I should do while im in there.
Im a tick over 70k miles.

I'd just call Bob Varela there....PBOC president (track...racing, they have a Delara (sp?) prototype in their shop...etc., Cup car shop....).

They have a tire to the track option for people, etc. I think my price included labor and belt...and the alternator installed. I think the belt is a 60k service item.... I want to say Pompano Beach....

I thought this car had a chain, not a timing belt? Do you mean accessory belt?

I meant the polyrib belt as described in the 996TT service listings on renntech.org.

Of course, they say change the tranny fluid every 90k miles. I've already done it a few times....
front diff too.

I just did my alternator a few months ago. Pretty easy to get to. Took about an hour with some experienced help... Not too bad of a job. Mine only had 40k on it...

just started last night. Under 12 volts and falls until the battery dies. Dies faster with city driving vs. highway driving. Thats why i was hoping it was a belt or tensioner vs. an alternator, but we'll see today.. Normally, I think it was between 12 and 14 IIRC.

kosmo96 is on a distinguished road
04 996 TT Cab. Mine failed at 21,000 miles with the symptoms you've described. Had it replaced by dealer under CPO. Gauge back to 13.8 or so and no further problems.
