New Clutch this winter.... doing my homework

Going to put in a new clutch this winter (install myself).

I know that this has been coverd "ad nauseam", but recently there were a rash of problems brought up like chatter, throwout bearings, etc, so maybe it's time for a new thread....

I'm going to be GT2 Hyraulics, want clamping for 600 hp, totally chatterless and streetable, dual mass for the flywheel, and not a "custom" throwout bearing length.

What parts do you recommend? Tuners please feel free to dive in too.

Thanks

Here are pictures and part numbers of the pieces you need to achive your goals - the only other thing that you should do is have Clutchmasters perform the pressure plate fulcrum mod to increase the clamp force. This set-up without the fulcrum mod is good to about 600HP. Beyond 600 HP, you need the fulcrum mod for additional clamp force. With the Clutchmaster mod, this clutch package will drive just like stock and hold a typical 700HP package. Zero chatter - none.

John D,

Great information.
Do you have the number for the correct throwout bearing?

Thanks

JJ, If you go the clutchmasters route, don't do the Kevlar material like I did. When it gets hot, it sticks to the flywheel and won't allow smooth shifting. They now have a fibertuff material that is supposed to be much easier going on the flywheel.

I'll be re-doing my clutch/PP when we rebuild the tranny on my car in the coming weeks.

John, Got any ideas how expensive the drive shaft is to replace? Mine has play and might need to be replaced... haven't looked at the coupling yet...
Mike

2LOW4, You use the OEm throw out bearing - I do not have the number.

Mike - I got mine from a 2wd conversion with ony 5,ooo miles (like new) for cheap money. Put up a WTB in the classifieds - there are lots around...

You can not buy just the rubber coupling, which is what fails, so you have to get the whole shaft.

Clutch Upgrade

John.... thanks ..this is a great threat with helpful info. When I had my 01 at the dealer for warranty repair of the 2nd gear synchro problem I attempted to upgrade the clutch with parts I obtained from another board member and it did not work with the dual mass flywheel and I ended up having the dealer install the GT2 clutch setup.

I have the Sachs 999 pressure plate which did not work out and will send it to Clutchmasters for the mod and will purchase the Sachs disk and keep it for my next clutch service.

I have not done the GT2 slave cylinder upgrade and would like to know if this modified setup requires the GT2 slave cylinder upgrade or if the stock setup is sufficient.

My "999" PP was first installed without the Clutchmaster mod and it started slipping after 6 months. Since doing the PP mod to it and adding the race disc, I have not had any slippage and I have used the current package a lot longer and many more miles than the one that started slipping.

No, you do not have to do the GT2 conversion to use these parts.
