Tech Question

One of our members gave me a ride in his Turbo Cab yesterday and the car did a very strange thing.

First of all, his car was in service for a "Warranty repair" the power steering reservoir was replaced. Now, when you stab the gas it sounds like the DV are honking and the car is boosting 1.2

This car is totally stock, why would it boost 1.2??? Also, with that said it does not seem to have any more power. Any thoughts????

Sounds like the wastegate lines or boost valve is unplugged. The BOVs will blow off in a over boost condition. He is going to destroy those turbos if he doesn't get that fixed. I also know of 2 motors melting down because of this.

Thanks Orli,

Yep, that would be me I took my "Stock" turbo in for the whinning noise at low RPM's the noise that goes away when you press the clutch in, they replaced the power steering reservoir under warranty. Great news no more whine however, 1.2 boost and car does not pull while in boost like before and has a horrible swooshing noise.

Any ideas before I take it back...

When they remove that pump and surroundings there are about 10 lines running everywhere. It only takes one to unhook. The reason it doesn't run well when boosting like that is it is going into knock control.

I've read and been told by service advisor that the high pitched "whine" is normal. My 2004 TT (6500 miles) whines about 25% of the time -- sometimes I barely notice, but other times it's a nuisance. (Disappears when clutch depressed, though sometimes needs to be depressed twice.) Should it be fixed? Any damage to the car by letting it go?

If the noise goes away when you depress the clutch it is possible it is the throw our bearing. It could also be the pilot shaft bearing. In either case it is not going to go away and may get worse with time. It is not life or death but should be addressed and not normal.

Light weight clutch setups throw all the rules out the window.

In my case if I let the car rev low enough that I can pop out of gear without pressing the clutch, I could stop and open the engine compartment and hear exactly where the noise was and it was the power steering reservoir whinning like hell. The dealer told me this was becomming common as they were finding many turbos with the same complaint.

I had a post a while back.. https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ighlight=whine

The whine seems to be gone but then again I have only had my car back since Friday and did not drive it much because of the new issue....

In my car, when the DV's honk during a shift, it means the rubber diaphragm has torn (710N's, exact same design as the 110 Bosch used in your car).

Your car is probably either experiencing throttle cut, going into limp mode, or just pulling timing way back due to overboosting. Definitely stay off boost until you take it back into the dealer. It sounds like your wastegates are not opening properly, which might explain the wooshing.

Is the 1.2 bar a spike, or does it taper to 1.2? Does your boost gauge flutter or hold constant?
