996 Turbo / GT2 Turbo discussion on previous model 2000-2005 Porsche 911 Twin Turbo and 911 GT2.

Do you guys get 'harassed' everytime you drive your car? (and other good car stories)

I've got a good one... especially for the Boston area guys. It's important to note that compared to a turbo, gt3, or gt2 my C4 is relatively unassuming. It is black though, and I do my best to keep it mirror clean. I also roll around with the trifecta of harassment material for Boston police: Conspicuous car, 25 years old, New Jersey plates. Granted they can't tell how old I am until I get pulled over, and then 2 arms full of ink and non-alter boy record pop up and it's pretty much a sure thing that I'll at least be asked to step out of my car. Now, I was younger and dumber once and have my head on straight now, but it's hard to give up being a smart a$$ sometimes. Anyway, it was early afternoon and I was getting ready to pull off Storrow Drive right by Kenmore Square (for the locals). A statey had been tailing me for what felt like an eternity, but was probably more like 3 miles. Despite not going a whisper over the speed limit as soon as I flipped on my turn signal, he turns on the lights. I never feel more confident than when I know I haven't done anything wrong, so I didn't think anything of it, pulled over and rolled down my window, and unbuckled my seatbelt (oops). We do the license and registration tango, and then he come back and...you can't make this up, he says "pop the rear hatch, i need to look inside." Now, I know I shouldn't have...but I couldn't resist, popped the rear lid and just waited. He comes back madder than hell and uses a few choice unprofessional words (i've heard worse) and demands I step out of the car. Before you could blink an eye I was handcuffed, searched, the car was searched, I became the main attraction for a variety of people waiting for the bus, getting out of school, shopping at Barnes & Noble, going to Uburger, etc. In such a crowded area, it was only a matter of time before another cop showed up and the two begin going over what happened. I explained to the second officer what led to me being handcuffed and searched and I say, "He told me to pop the rear lid, and so I did exactly what I was told..." The second officer turns to the other one and says (again, you can't make this up) "hey a$$hole, 911's have had the engine in the back for over 40 years, are you new?" I bust out laughing, he busts out laughing....and I get uncuffed, and a pat on the back and an apology from the 2nd officer. Might not be funny to all people, but to me...it's good as gold. haha

-Alex

P.S. ...I know it's not a GT3 story, but thought it was somewhat on topic.

I would have been blowing a fuse if that happened to me. He had no cause to pull you over.

that was a classic. I did they exact same thing to the Tech Inspector at the local dragstrip. He asked to pop the hood so he could see the engine and walked over to the front so I popped the trunk and let him see it and he said "where is your engine". At which time his partner just about fell over laughing at him and said "911's have the engine in back fool" I am sure the entire crew there got a good laugh for the rest of the night ribbing him

I thought he might have booked you for having a stolen engine in your trunk.

Yeah, I know he had no real cause to pull me over, but I knew I was gonna get off fine, so I figured I'd just go with it. No need to give them the opportunity to "get creative" with the search process.

OK onto harassed by cops stories; humor works sometimes,

- Coming home 1am one morning; car sounding great, 60 deg outside (engine response snappy) & rushing to get home. Coming up to a junction, green light arrow turning left (45 mph limit to 45 mph limit). Doing around the limit, hit the junction in 2nd rolled into full throttle just past the apex. Car sounds glorious, then brake hard for my right turn home 1 block later. Blue lights do a U turn from the light follows me, pulls me over. He walks up to my window, I look up sheepishly. He figures out i'm sober, "Didn't you see me at the light", I say "No", with a half grin. He can't help but smile, says "slow down", walks away without asking for anything else.

I got pulled over for a 50mph in a 35mph zone some years ago in the country up in NY. I was young and full of vineger. Can't remember why I was so out of sorts that day but I started berating the cop and calling him a tax collector with a gun on his hip, and asked why he wasn't out catching real criminal instead of picking the pockets of honest citizens. He pretty much let it roll off his back and gave me the ticket. I went to court hoping he wouldn't show up. Well the town was too small and he was there. For some reason the judge told us all to meet with the officer who gave us our tickets. I go over to the guy and since the ticket was issued 2 months prior, I'm no longer upset. He has the ticket in his hand and turns it over and shows me he has written down all the things I said to him. Of course I know I'm screwed, but he says something like "how about if I reduce your speed to X?" I'm sure I had a look of disbelief on my face, but he did what he said and I got a reduced fine. Never mouthed off to a cop again.

Was driving about 6AM in the morning and going around a bend to merge on a different freeway at about XXMPH. Look over and there is a cop in his Mustang coming up to the side of me (he was doing his own early morning high speed run). I pull on the E brake instead of pressing on the "I am guilty" brake pedal. He tucks in behind me and starts pacing/following at 55 MPH for about 3 miles. He blows by me over 100+, gets off the freeway. I know he is guninng (pun intended) for me so I am still going 55MPH, he comes back on the on freeway and almost runs into the back of me (must be those Ford brakes). Next he is on his PA system "explaining" what he thinks about my driving for about a mile or two. Gets off on the freeway again, and you guessed it does the same thing all over again. Follows me again for about two miles. Blows by me again at 100+, and starts following/pacing some other car ahead of me going about 70MPH for about a mile before turning on the lights. As I drive by he gets out of his patrol car ranting and raving almost running to the car that he pulled over to the side of the freeway. Whew!!! That was close.
