Plenum/TB install 996TT
Plenum/TB install 996TT
For those who have installed Plenums/TB's on their 996TT, can you do the job by lowering the motor w/o dropping it? Also, does the factory Y Pipe need to be altered in anyway? And is there a certain Throttle body I should buy?
my experience is with AP's product. It is possible to install with engine lowered, but not an easy job. I believe the OEM Y mount/bracket does need to be altered to fit the OEM Y. I used the AP Y so can't comment on details here. few members here have however and have posted relevant info, should be easy to find in a search.
I did this mod with the IPD 75mm with a 75mm TB. My gains were noticable (3-5% increase) in the mid and high range. My wrench installed it without lowering the engine but its much easier if you lower it some. It is a very worthwhile mod. To reattach the Y-pipe with a typical coupler you will need to modify the base of the Y to the same diameter of the plenum/TB. Vivid has some couplers that increase/decrease the diameter so you could potentially use the standard Y-pipe if you could find the right coupler.
I have done it several times without lowering the motor. The OEM boot will stretch to 75mm, but it's a pain...

If you are doing 70mm, I believe the OEM TB will fit. If you are doing 75mm, you'll need a bigger TB. The OEM Ypipe may fit, but why not getting the bigger one and call it a day in that area?
No mod needed to the stock y pipe?
Do Y-pipe the same time. Stock y-pipe is pretty small. If you increase size/flow of plenum and TB but have small section at stock y-pipe, what is the point? I think John/speedtech has special price running on y-pipe.
