Blew coolant line or something tonight.

I was cruising with the family at 65mph and heard my belts squeel and then stop after 2 or 3 seconds. about 20 seconds later a low coolant light came on and my temp light was blinking. Temp was only around 195 to 205, pretty far from the red. I immediatly pulled over and shut it down. there was a LOT of coolant leaking, a large trail followed me off the interstate.

Any ideas? I was not driving hard at all, just cruising, it was not overheating 1st, the temp didnt start rising untill after. I just got home, and am too tired to look at it now, I was just hoping this was a common thing and someone says "Oh yeah, thats you lower coolant line, replace it for $.99 and you will be fine."

Car has 42000 miles.

Thanks in advance,
Jayson

It did scare me a bit, but after thinking about it, i was pretty sure it wasnt anything major. Car wasnt overheating, I wasnt driving hard, etc... just cruising and squeal... I was shocked at the rate of the leak. It went from full to empty in under a minute for sure.

Probably didnt overheat. If I had to guess, the ECU must monitor for rapid temp changes, because it was nowhere near the red area of the temp gauge. Now, if the gauge is damaged then I may be in trouble. It cranks and runs fine, I just moved it 20 feet. Also, it took almost 2 hrs for the tow truck to show last night, so the motor was cooled off when he arrived. I drove it on to the truck.

Thank you everyone for the responses, my garage is almost finished(house was just raised 4 ft). I have a Greg Smith 4 post lift in my future, this incedent has just expedited that purchase.

not sure how accurate or which parts of the system the dash gauge sensor is monitoring.

i have the brockway obd2 parameter display. had some air in the system from full flush/refill. Idling ... Stock meter was steady just above 80C and brockway ECT jumped around and read highs in 100C range. which puzzled me because I thought both meters took the signal from the same sensor. anyone else noticed this? if the readings are accurate, it's something to be aware of.

congrats on lift. good times ahead...

the stock guage probably has a damper built in to keep the guage from jumping around. It's impossible for the temps to be that rock steady under all kinds of temperatures and operating temps.

I bet brockway is correct.

Red face

same thing happen to me it was a coolant line coupling by the trans. mine wasn't too expensive it did take a long time to get the part. The coupling was exclusive to the X50 and had to be shipped from Germany. But there is a similar coupling on non X50s. My car lost a lot of coolant but never came close to over heating never went above 180-185. Dealer said the gauge would have reflected it had it over heated. He also said that had the car been starting to over heat it would have started to shut down cylinders to help prevent the over heating. Good Luck with this but I think you are fine. by the way the advice was 99 cents.

if there is no coolant in the engine, how do you reckon it would register the temps?

Check the passenger and drivers side "big hoses" that travel past the motor mounts....

Brilliant! and terrifying at the same time. Thanks, now you have ruined my day. In your opinion, if from the time it dropped fluid to engine off was less than a minute, 1.5 mins max, could it have overheated?

Jayson don't worry. The engine will be fine. You react properly. Just tell us where the leak was from when you found it. Pictures can be really useful if it's possible.

I will absolutely respond with pictures, it will be a couple of weeks, very busy at the moment, and I want to do this repair myself.
