Question Question re. Boost Leaks

There have been quite a few posts regarding the power loss from boost leaks. I was wondering, if to fix them the motor has to be dropped, if not can someone post the list of the boost hoses to check and can it be done in one's garage. I would assume that if there is a boost leak then you would see lower peak boost levels on the gauge. Is this assumption correct even if the leak is small?

Lightbulb boostage leakage

It would depend on where the boost leaks are, but none of them are small.
The area's you could check are at the diverters, possibly a loose hose clamp. Especially if the diverters were replaced, and the stock clamps were not reused. Also you could have an internal failure of the diverters. The other area you may be able to do some thing about is the "innies" and "outies" (over simplification, I'm afraid..) boost hoses. Check the two big black hoses in the engine ("outies") compartment by pulling and wiggling at the same time, neither should yield on either end of the hose. The other ("innies") are under the car, just underneath those cool exit ducts in your rear bumper, reach under and do the wiggle and pull routine for both hoses, one each side. If these 4 hoses and your diverters are tight, then you should seek professional help.

To find boost leaks, you simply do a pressure check - is there an accessible intake track on the Turbo? AWE sells a piece of my car that you affix to the intake pipe right after the MAF, with a fitting for an air compressor. You can see if pressure is leaking from the system (my shop pressure checks at around 20psi). If you have a breather in the intake track for the differential or anything like that, be sure to plug it off (but, a shop should also know to do that).

If you have trouble finding the leak once you know you have one, you can actually fill the system with smoke from a fog machine, and then pressure check and look for the smoke leaking out.

You need to pressure check the motor, in my car the hose where the DV's mount (F-HOSE) were leaking and I needed to be replaced and the plenum was not mounted correctly. To fix both they needed to partial drop my motor.

ebaker....christian, tech who came over from ruf to assess cause, had a homemade contraption of sorts to detect the leak...it was detected in about 5 minutes.

As someone said, start with simple. My car developed a boost leak all of a sudden about a year or so ago. Porsche dealer after charging for diagnostics told me they didn't find anything (visual and clamp tests supposedly, never use South Shore in Freeport BTW) and 2 days later an independent mechanic working in my own garage found loose clamp right on top of engine out back. Porsche uses these crappy compression type clamps and when we replaced with screw type problem was fixed and boost was .1 better than before. Frankly. I'm asshamed I didn't find it myself.

Thanks guys, I'll check the hoses that are easily reached and go from there. Like Sean my boost was running consistently at 1.2 bar max. and now it's 1.1 and takes considerably longer to reach where before it jumped right to 1.2 bar. Sean, I'll PM you.
