Tuning... Dyno vs Datalogging

What are your feelings in terms of getting the most out of your car, do you think it can be done datalogging the car and sending files back and forth? Or do you think your cars that much better served tuning on a dyno?

i think basic turbo kits can get good results via datalogs, big builds custom, one off's need to have some dyno time to squeeze all the power out

Dyno. With emulator you can tune live and change parameters on the spot. End result will be a smoother tune if done properly.

Dyno is great for base calibration. Because you aren't going to be able to test individual rpm/load combinations on the street. And it's also good for "torture testing" because you can sustain high load/steady state conditions that you couldn't on the street unless you were towing a motor home.

But when it comes to acceleration performance (ie, rowing through the gears), it's hard to beat the real world. Shifting through gears with true non-contaminated air (which is usually the case with dyno shops) will present load swings that you will not likely see on the dyno. And being able to manage these load swings with seeing transient detonation/KR or rich bog is what separates a typical aftermarket tune from a good one.

So both types of tuning are necessary if you want the best possible tune

Do dynos provide the same engine loads as doing real world street pulls?

Robin@EPL is infamous around these parts
A combination of both is the best way to achieve OEM-quality calibration. You can't simulate all conditions on a dyno, and you can't simulate all conditions on the street.
