Hard to shift?

I’ve done some searching but haven’t found anything conclusive yet. Trying to figure out what could be causing my car to be so hard to shift. This is my 1st Porsche so at first I wrote it off as “a Porsche thing” but after taking it to the shop today to have the slave cylinder, accumulator (they were toast) and tranny fluid changed, the shift lever is still very hard to shift between all gears.

When in gear, I have to pull fairly hard to get it out of one gear, then it hangs/sticks in what would be the neutral position, then takes another yank to get into the next gear. The guys at the shop said that it doesn’t feel right to them either which rules out my “Porsche thing” theory.

I bought the car a month ago and love it except for this. The car has a short shift kit but I don’t know what kind.

Any ideas on what this could be? Is there something I need to adjust? Is it the tranny going out? Its not grinding or making any strange noises and not popping out of gear..just hard to shift.

some times the short shifter is the problem. Here is what happened to me, the car got very hard to shift out of no where. I went straight to the shop. popped the shift cables off the trans and shifted the gears by hand no problem. Ok must be the cables or the shifter. I turned out to be the roller bearing on the shifter pivot. lift up the shifter boot and remove the cross bolt that holds the shift lever to the aluminum shifter body. The bearing is pressed in to the shift lever. The cross bolt should slide right out. I believe most of the brands use the same set up so I would start there because it is the easiest to check with out a lift on hand. Hope this is your problem.

Also, depending on the brand of short shifter you have, the effort can be significantly increased. I had a b&m, and finally went to a modified 997 shifter that it about half the effort. If adjusting cables doesn't work, you might want to try a different unit.

Do you feel that its not shifting because the lever is stiff or does it feel like the clutch isn't disengaging correctly. ie the box is still turning.
I ask because a seized or damaged spigot bearing can "Grab" the input shaft and allow it to rotate slowly even if the clutch is working fine. This will make gear selection hard, especially going into 1st or reverse.
Just a thought.

I would check to see what type of short shift kit you have. The B&M is known to be notchy. I switched to a OEM 997 shifter and am much happier! Your shift cables might be out of adjustment from installing the aftermarket shifter?

Thanks for the suggestions guys! Hadn't realized that it could be as simple as needing cables adjusted (fingers crossed). Since I'm not sure what kind of shifter it is (suspect B&M, its anodized black?) and have no instructions etc, are there any guidlines/DIYs for adjusting them without any special tools or jigs?

I'd be very concerned with "the shop" if they can't figure it out...

Agree that the two things I'd look at are cable adjustment and incomplete disengagement.

Does it fee the same with the engine off? If so, cable adjustment.

Just MHO

ecudooberhead is infamous around these parts
Definitely look into the shifter... I actually had my a transmission rebuilt in my vet a few years back because my mechanic said it needed to be done when I was having issues shifting. Found out the problem still existed on the drive home after having my new tranny put in- turned out to be a simple faulty aftermarket shifter...

I would be very careful with the aftermarket SSKs. There are a number of really reputable shops that have discussed that they feel the SSK's are causing excessive wear on the G50. You can search here and rennlist for the threads. My transmission is out right now for a rebuild, so I have done lots of reading on this. I am running the 997 shifter right now, and it is much nicer then the aftermarket unit that came with my car.

You can find adjustment and remove / repair instruction on B&M's web site:
