I need your help whether to buy a 996TT or not no

Hello to all! I am new member and need your help. I am in a bind in trying to purchase my first Porsche!! I recently located a 2001 Porsche 996TT that I am interested in buying. The car has about 23000 miles and is in excellent condition. The current owner takes care of all his cars and is very meticulous about them. He also seems like a very unlikely person to abuse his cars. Aside from suspension work and rims the vehicle has the AWE 700R Kit which is huge! NOW I went for my PPI today and everything was running smooth. I got a full compression and leak down test done. The compression test came back with 190PSI in all cylinder and the leak down test came back with 2-3%, which from what I understand is pretty good. HOWEVER when the ECU log was downloaded the "number of ignitions range 1" showed 12307 and the "number of Ignitions range 2" showed 1560. From what was explained to me this is bad but it contradicts the good results from the leak down test. The last recorded log for the Ignitions range 1 and 2 show the car was likely at AWE getting its upgrades done. I contacted Mike at AWE who confirmed the owners personality and unlikeliest to abuse cars. He stated that when the kit was installed they ran it on the dyno to tune it and ensure all parts were working properly without any excessive abuse. He did mention that the redline on the car moves up from 7000 RPM to 7200 RPM with the upgrade. SOOOOOOOOO what do I do. Buy or not to Buy? Please help!

it will save you a lot of $ if you get the car you want. the question i would ask myself is, do i want a turbo with minimal expense or something that may cost a lot of money to maintain? most don't go over 130 mph anyway, at least i don't. from basic knowledge if a car is stock with a flash , exhaust, intake, there is not much that could go wrong, hopefully. if you're 300 hp over stock without the correct internals there is loss of life to the engine, the engine has been pushed. even with the proper internal mods there is still risk. i have spent countless hours
thinking about the mods on my car. i decided to just make it like a gt2 with the safety of all wheel drive. this will insure that while i own the car it is
being pushed, but being pushed without a sponsorship pocketbook/mind set.. just my ten cents.. i do know if you don't buy a turbo it will not be the last Porsche you buy... that's still questionable ; i've had two!! good luck

from what I understand stage 1 and 2 overrevs are not a big deal just redline. I think stage 5 and 6 overrevs are the ones to worry about...hopefully someone with more experience here can chyme in...

The car is fantastic it has all the mods I would do especially the hp upgrade. Maybe not that much HP but im not complaining. By getting it with the mods already done I would be saving money...hopefully! It was explained to me the there used to be several Ignition ranges that indicate the revolution range however they told me that they have got away from that and now just have Ignition range 1 and 2 for at redline and over redline. I am in the process of finding out if AWE brings it to 7200 RPM during the dyno to account for the over redline numbers. BTW the MODS were done approx 1300 miles ago! thanks for the replies!

Sounds like you are looking at a great car with significant upgrades. I wouldn't be concerned with the rev ranges based on the information you have posted. Is there more risk for a car that's been upgraded versus a stock one? Couldn't answer that... but... if you plan on modding any turbo you purchase anyway, and this one is the color and options you like then you could save some serious cash getting one already complete.

does anyone know if there are only 1 and 2 overrev readings for the 996 ecu vs the 997 ECU?

Im pretty confident in saying the car was babied by the owner and the high rev readings were from getting several dyno tests at AWE

from what i understand, range 1 and 2 aren't much to worry about. these are redline and barely above redline. even range 3 isn't a huge deal if you do a compression leak down test. range 4 is possible damage, range 5 is probably damage, range 6 IS damage.

OR, you could also consider mines if the car you are looking at possibly isn't a desirable color etc.

First of all I really appreciate the feedback and your thoughts on the matter guys! Now regarding the above post...Thats what I thought! now with the range 1 if I'm correct the RPM is right at the redline. Range 2 is above BUT you don't know how much and for how long. Now I contacted Mike at AWE again. From his testing on the specific Porsche I am looking at he ran several dyno's. He said that the results from his testing show that at 6896 RPM the power starts to taper off so they cut the dyno plot there. AWE seems like a solid tuning shop and I've only heard good things about them. I doubt they would of abused the car, which is where the last range 1 and 2 flag were recorded. In addition he has nothing but good things to say about the current owner meticulous, picky, definitely not the type of person to beat on a car! Im going for another test drive tomorrow morning to drive the car the way it was meant to be driven. Nothing crazy, but it would help solidify my decision!

BTW I am not paying a premium price for the upgraded parts if you add up all the mods (that were recently put on) and subtract that from the asking price then I'd be paying only $26,000 for a stock 996tt. With that said a good price for a 996tt with this mileage and a clean PPI is around $45,000. Now for that price to put on the same mods (which id likely do) the car would wind up costing me $71,000 which is a HUGE difference.
