Stock Wing Downforce

There is a nice article on the 996 Turbo in the latest article of Total 911 magazine (great magazine BTW). It says that the stock retractable wing on the 996T is good for drum roll........ 9 Kilos of down-force at 190 MPH. How weak is that?

Now since 1 Kilo is 2.2 lb. that means that you get a whopping 20 lb of down-force. How weak is that considering the system probably weighs 20lb to begin with that's 40lb of down-force!!! Yoohoooo!

That seems to be coroborated here: http://www.autozine.org/Graveyard/ht...996_Turbo.html "Porsche claims the rear spoiler generate 9 kg down force at top speed 190 mph"

Ari, in the book "Porsche turbo, the full history of the race and production cars" they also mention this 9 kgs of downforce at 300 km/hr. Page 99. Very interesting chapter on aerodynamic....

pwengland is infamous around these parts
So sounds like the perfect thread to start asking, what is your favourite wing !!!!! Particularly for us boring folks who currently have the pretty (but based on this thread totally useless) stock wing..... Bring it on..

Guy's, don't forget our motors already give downforce just by hanging out passed the rear wheels.

Put 40lbs in a backpack and ride a bike, at no matter what speed its significant. If the designers NEEDED more downforce then the wing provided, the wing would be different.

I pulled the fuse at the Texas Mile and seemed to go faster than letting it go up.

Most vehicles would be producing lift at that speed, id take 9kg of downforce over lift any day. Id like to know what is going on at the front for downforce at that speed.

Realistically,

I rarely exceed 100 MPH or even do full bore blasts past 3rd gear. I like my license. what's fun, is 2nd gear. There is enough torque to get the car squirelly even with AWD. It's a blast every-time IMO.

I like the Strosek bolt on wing from Precision Porsche. I've said it many times on this board. I think Strosek was having a magical, artful moment when they designed this piece

Generally speaking, I seem to have outgrown body kits. But I like this wing.

Edwin has some good profile pics I'm sure he can post.

I also run a factory Aero style lip from RoTec in carbon.

All for looks BTW.

Nice car Ari, I run the same front lip and the TA type 1 spoiler which i think you had previously before the Strosek, also the same exhaust! your cars just a tab bit faster though .... you should try and tuck that exhaust in more next time your cars in the shop see below, you have some space there from the bottom of the bumper to the top of the exhaust, should be an easy fix.

Does the book mention that the 996 tt has front end lift at high speed? I've heard this mentioned before.

No. Not that I saw.

Wondering how effective the factory aero is and how that compares to the GT2

Tnx for looking. When I went from stock to aero, I could tell no difference. I then bought a fiberglass spoiler that had little sluiceways and little verticals at the outer part of the spoiler. Still couldn't tell any difference.

The way I would judge difference was by how hard it was to point the car in at turn 9 Road Atlanta. It wasn't until I fabricated a 4" splitter to go underneath the spoiler that I found any real difference in front downforce. I could finally get around that turn flat out without scaring myself.
