DIY rear carpet removal and lightweight carpet replacement.

I just removed all the heavy carpet in the rear compartment of my car for weight purposes but still wanted a stock look. I replaced it with lighter material and it took me about 4hrs. The carpet/padding cost me about $40 and 1 can of 3M spray adhesive that was $15. I may quit my day job....

I will but I have to weigh everything and post it up. I'm almost there.

Just weighed all the rear carpet that I removed and it was 34lbs. I still need to weigh the new material I replaced it with but my guess is 4lbs..

I get what you're saying but the 4lbs I put back into it totally is worth it on looks and sound deadening alone. Remember I like to drive this thing around not only on the track. It's pretty loud inside the car without any carpet.

A bunch, I'm adding it all up and still want to do a couple more before I post up on the weight loss thread. I corner balanced/weighed it a month ago and it was 3,400 with 1/2 tank, helmet and myself (170lbs+Arai helmet/carbon Hans?lbs) since then I've taken out carpet (-34lbs) and added a carbon roof (-30lbs). My list of mods is below as far as what I've done so far. I still want to do a hood and battery (any advise).

I used some really cheap/lite carpet padding shown in the pics above ( purposeful to kill some of the engine/gear box noise). The carpet is thin/lite as well and is very easy to work with. It's not to be used in well traffic area's due to it fraying up and getting lint ***** but is perfect for the rear where nobody steps or sits. It's basically the same material used for stereo boxes. Hope this helps.
I may do the rest of my car after seeing how much weight I saved and how much of that same carpet is still in there.

Cool thanks. I did a bunch of weight loss mods too and kept track of the weights. I went to the dragstrip and weighed it (I know, not totally accurate), but was 20lbs off. I estimated a 230lb loss, but found it was 250. My car with 1/4 tank was 3150 w/o me. 3330lbs with me. I've posted all my stuff in the weight loss thread a long time ago.

I also like it bare but you got your point there.

Since I have bigger front brakes, my spare will not fit; and I think this is a good mod for removing the spare and make the front hood space bigger.

Nice work Bucky...that's a hell of a cost effective DIY weight loss modification.

*edit* I forgot to ask but did you quantify the weight loss of the carbon roof? Did you use the GMG version or the Getty Design one (or other)? Thanks!
