How to service a Turbo Charger?

Figured id post this question in the 996 section. Does any one know if it is beneficial to service a turbo? I have a pair of Alpha3071s that were slightly used. I would like to have them serviced but dont know which direction to even start! Thanks in advanced.

Servicing them is "usually" pretty straight forward, if that's all that you're planning on doing to them

I wouldn't advise anyone to try machining, balancing, or rebuilding a turbo though

You can send them to Anyone who works on Garrett turbo's. If the turbo's were used removed and are now sitting with you I would send them for a rebuild. Garrett had/ has and exchange program as long as the water lines were used. I do not run the water lines as the cooling system is taxed enough.

Yeah, it's certainly not something you want to do yourself. It's a pretty precise process. If I remember correctly Turbomasters is a pretty good outfit.

Why not send them back to Tial for service? That's what I would do.

You watch the videos and it makes it look like anybody could rebuild/hybrid a turbo. What about high speed balancing? Is it really necessary? The video would make you think differently.
Has anybody attempted this? And if so what were the results?

If it's just replacing seals and bearings it's easy

If you're replacing other parts it's definitely a job for the pros!

Not first hand knowledge but allegedly just doing the seals and bearings is very straight forward. Don't need the balance job if u keep the original allignment but if you drop the compressor wheel your in trouble. Balancing is only 60-80 dollars anyway. Rebuild kits are about $100. U could rebuild urself and send off for balance just for fun. Too bad nobody will sell upgraded wheels or I expect some would be building turbos.

This looks like an hour long job or less for an experienced technician. Why did it take my former tuner 90 days to do this? Every time I called him during that time he was "working" on them. What a lying ****** bag he was.

You can get upgraded wheels, plenty of choices online. Plus there cheap. He did take the turbo from a 16 to 20 wheel without balancing it. Makes me wonder.

Well....I see 18 and 20g wheels on the web but scared to pick one up as i hear there are some with differences between one 18 to another such as number of fins and so on and so on. I even had a guy tell me the 18g and 20g wheel is actually a garret wheel even tho described as Mitsubishi. There certainly no billet wheels available!!!! If I knew exactly which wheel to get with part number I think I would take it on myself and send off for balance and machine housing.

Fellas- I emailed TialSport and no answer back yet. Can anyone suggest a reputable company to do this procedure? They are Alpha3071s
