Quick 30k service question
Quick 30k service question
This might be a duplicate, and if so I apologize, but can't find it anywhere.
I prefer to do the maintenance on the cars myself with my high end mechanic buddy. A control thing I suspect.
Anyway, the maintenance manuals that he has for the 996 TT say that we need to take the rear spoiler off for the 30k service. Why in the heck would I need to do this? Anyone else have to do this to change the plugs and coil packs?
Again, sorry if a dup, but that step just seems ridiculous and unnecessary and I don't want to have to take anything off the car that isn't necessary (including the bumper, but that remains to be seen).
Advice and experienced opinions are very much welcomed! Thanks in advance!!!

Factory manual calls for rear bumper removal for changing the plugs, which are part of the 30k service.
Some guys change 'em without removing the bumper - I think John @ Speedtech posted some info about this recently.

Im not a pit crew boss, but removing the rear bumper really isn't hard to do. Done it before for new intercoolers and laser sensors. You can put tape along the seam on the quarter panel to help protect the paint if you want.
True, just did it recently to install aftermarket exhaust! It may sound intimidating, but it's really simple!
Thanks guys, and good idea. I've had all my cars torn down pretty far, but I get a little more nervous about my 911. Just my baby I guess, but better me than some kid at the dealership!

It takes all of 15 minutes to remove the rear bumper and makes access to the coils and plugs a snap. I'm not sure why you wouldn't remove it when doing plugs and coils. Without removing it you won't be able to get a torque wrench in there....
I had the exact same feeling, but have been surprised more than once how easy these cars are to work on!
That makes me feel better...hopefully it will be as easy as you and others have indicated.
It is an easy DIY. I do it by myself, but if you have a helper, it might make you feel more confident. The bumper and tabs are plastic, so contact with a body panel isn't going to gouge your paint.
Some claim it does not "need" to (including the manufacturer of mine) depending on where the bolts are lined up, but it is so easy to do, IMHO it is foolish not to as it is sooo much easier with the bumper off.
