Need help with oil change
27mm is the correct size. If you don't have one (just as an FYI), it is not a very common size. I went to a few auto stores and the largest size they had was 24mm or 25mm. I ended up going to Lowes and they had 3 of them.
. I'll use the Shell stuff my neighbor (Ferrari mechanic) uses. Seems like good oil. That is also the weight my GTI uses, so that comes in handy.
I have owned my GT2 for almost 2 months now. I have since changed the transaxle fluid and the oil. Before attempting either fluid exchange I read every single DIY I could find on both procedures.
I may have gone a bit overboard w my process...on the other hand both the transaxle and oil change went smooth...so maybe my I was right to have all the info I could under my belt before starting.
My suggestion to you, and anyone else reading this thread is to not just go at these cars ***** nilly like you would your minivan. The dry sump system itsself adds a few extra steps as well as the turbos and the handful of sealing washers are...for starters..enoughg to get you scratching your head.
Soooo my suggesgion is to read the multiple DIY's on oil changes. Get the proper fluids, filter, and sealing washers and start again. This will most certainly up your odds of a successful DIY 996 oil change.

I have a 2007 GTI with APR stage 1 software on it. It's also lowered on Bilstein sport shocks+Eibach lowering springs. That car is a LOT of fun to drive!! Fantastic value!
and fu*k the ppi. lol
I just changed the oil last week. Don't bother draining the turbos. The total amount of oil from both turbos filled about half of a Jello Pudding cup. You know the ones you buy already made for you in the super market.
Also, the oil filter canister is on very tight. The Autozone wrenches do not work. I've tried every one of them. The only ones that work is the official Porsche one and the Lisles #53700 wrench with a swivel handle. My mechanic friend used the Lisles one and loosen the filter canister in less than 10 seconds. It's on very tight. Also, the swivel handle gives you enough room to get additional swing room and get beyond the obstructions. See pix attached. 3rd pix show how a non swivel wrench hits the engine compartment lip. Also, the first one shows the swivel wrench swinging beyond the 'Y' pipe.
Use a rag around the filter canister, so you don't scratch it. Also, there is very little oil in the filter assembly. Use a rag or a syringe to get the little bit out. Probably about same amount as in the two turbos. Not much compare to the 8 quarts you've already drained. So, I don't think it's a big deal if you've left that amount in the turbos and the filter housing.

Preparation breeds success.
Inspect your oil filter as well. Cut it open and look closely at it, will give a good indication of potential future issues. And/or oil analysis every once in awhile to start a baseline.

I paid the $35 (or whatever it was) for the Porsche oil filter wrench and it's a breeze. The oil filter really shouldn't be on there that tight but I typically use a long breaker bar to loosen nuts and bolts; it makes it really easy and you don't hurt your hands by hitting anything when it finally breaks loose.
Torque wrench only to tighten though
