2nd gear popout - not another thread?!
2nd gear popout - not another thread?!
Hi all. Sorry for posting another thread on the 2nd gear popout issue with the 996 Turbo.
I've just put a deposit on an 01 996 Turbo with around 20k miles, ONE owner.. yeah! Found a good one..
Went and tested it and it seems to NOT pop out of second gear on deceleration or when giving it gas/letting off gas abruptly in second gear.
Do you think its safe to say that if taken care of and not abused (shifted like ****) that these transmissions can last quite some time? Or is this just something that is going to happen no matter how you drive?
Just looking to make myself feel better about the purchase.
Thanks all, and sorry that I created another thread on this issue. Lol

I had the 2nd gear pop out problem. It was already doing it when I bought the car and ended up rebuilding the box. Had to replace the gear and slider with synchors because they were damaged. I had the CMS shift arrestor installed to prevent the pop out in the future. Trans has never popped out of gear since. Highly recommend the mod if this ever becomes a issue.

i had another car with it. wasnt a big deal really on day to day driving.., and yet it just ruined the car. i had porsche fix it under warranty... twice lol

the thing about 2nd gear pop is that once the dogring/synchro is rounded, it doesn't get "better" so the instances of it occurring tend to increase commensurate with load on the gear. e.g. the more load and frequency in second, the greater the frequency of occurrence. the times I had it prior to repair I too just rested my hand on the shifter when engine braking downhill in 2nd. but that, over time, is a PITA. but it wont cause any other harm or get any "worse" once it's as bad as it gets. if that makes sense.
the truly important thing to remember is that that is just issue number one for the g50 box for a street driven car. over time and with enough miles on the box, the bearing ARE going to ( at some point ) dry out owing to their design and that they are "enclosed" which friction wreaks havoc with over many many heat cycles, and the bearings dry out.
so.. yeah, theoretically one can "wait" to repair it since its a $4k ( min ) job, but do it now or do it later.. because your bearings will dry out one day, necessitating the opening up of the box for a refresh, and then 1/2 gears and synchros will just be on the "to do" list WITH the bearings.
but sure, you can drive it for ages, and just hold the shifter esp while downhill engine braking ( sucks lol )
NP, sorry you have it ( though the op luckily doesn't! )..
you might look into ol 8mm ball bearing insert hat trick as i've read of this being a very helpful stopgap measure, that while it cant improve a rounded dogring, it can ( as I understand it? ) help to provide a more secure engagement of the gear while in 2nd. so look up tim941's thread on here for some diy's on that temp fix. the g-box detent is also an option, but I'm a bit more dubious of that one, but not for having tried it.. it may well work too. I would seek those two out, opt for one of them as a temp measure.., and then wait to refresh the box if and when the bearings eventually dry out. that's what I would do unless ya got $4-5k ( min ) to do it right and now.
gl with it, and apologies to the op. I have a visceral understanding of 2nd gear pop, and I like to share
