Fell from the top? They say the lenses can be removed if you bake them. Search around, you'll find this topic, perhaps on rennlist, maybe the 996 forum.

almost looks like its part of the projector surround...?
could take the lens off by baking it in the oven, I've had good luck with 200F for 5mins on other cars, some guys go up to 300F...

i have the strangest piece of *something* that is somehow slid btw the lens and the innards. it drives me nuts as the only way to get it out is to crack the lens and i can move it by smacking the top of the lamp assembly. don't have clue how it got in there? but its far beyond my ability.

i also need to "bake" the discolored plastic of my vw lenses and replace. talk about dingy! whoever conceived of these plastic headlamp lenses was clearly planning ahead on reselling the lenses over time.

It doesn't appear to have come from the exposed area of the lite, very weird. An electric fuel pump noise also seems to come from that area when ignition is turned on

Wrench comes with the car (its in your plastic bag) taking the headlight out, on 996's is super-easy - it's in your manual I believe, just when you slide the headlight back in - make sure there's is no movement, I had to lock mine back in place by putting the wrench inside again---
