Anyone using the AEM Infinity?
Anyone using the AEM Infinity?
I noticed they have a PnP system available now. No posts in their skimpy support forum about it and they appear to have taken their very informative older forums off-line - grr! I'm pretty familiar with their older V1 hardware\software but have been away from tuning for awhile. I've begun to ponder a system for my 996 and was surprised to see AEM had an offering although the $1500 price-tag for the jumper harness which is half the list of the damned ECU had my jaw on the floor.
Not a good way to sell the silly ECUs IMO.
Anyway, I've only ever seen the barest of mention about this and was wondering if anyone had waded into those waters. It looks like it only drives one Wideband off the box but otherwise I'm not sure I see any show stoppers? I've had past experience with AEM's "base maps" and many folks ended up running large parts of my V1 Supra map on their cars - often without knowing it judging from some of the "tuned" cars that came to me locally!
Anyway. the AEM is capable of doing datalogging to a USB stick which is good and I'm sad to see ProEFI doesn't do without a laptop or additional logger. The AEM's sparse support forum isn't good but I'm not seeing a ton of people discussing 996 on the Syveccs or ProEFI forums I've poked my head in either. Heck, Syveccs doesn't even list Porsche as a platform!
Am I the only oddball who wants to tune their own car? I'm okay going to a tuner for an initial tune but I'll be tweaking and tuning and datalogging on my own afterwards, I don't want another black box.
Is the AEM simply disliked and if so for what reason? Can it drive the dashboard and whatnot, what are the shortcomings vs the others? Finding a good comparison of the 3 offerings I'm aware of has been tough and it seems all of the choices aren't exactly cheap so switching isn't likely to be painless.
Thoughts?

Thinking about it!! Happy there are two options now for standalone EMSs now for our car.
I've talked to a couple local tuners who have installed and tuned the infinity (not on 996TT though). They had nothing but good things to say about it.

don't know about the aem but I'm going to guess theres maybe a dozen? on proefi. one factor is cost of course a full setup is approx 6000$ plus install labor and tuning. that being said its like comparing a bagfone to a I6s. standalone is light years ahead of the oem computer. in the hands of the right tuner its amazing what can be done.
as an example i have 650 rwhp on 14 psi with 60% injector duty cycle (1300 id injectors) on 3071 turbos with e85. i can run 93 octane at will with constant tuning adjustment thru the e85 analyzer. its a very conservative tune due to stock rods and head bolts
harness price isn't to bad. i think my 996t harness was about 2000$. i don't know any software that doesn't require either a laptop or logger to gather the data. the can logger is really nice to have and if you use a laptop the amount of data being logged is incredible

There are several members that have the ProEFI setup and as we all know Garth at undercover is the man. For Syvecs there are a few members in here that run them. I believe a 996 Turbo member is running an S8 plug and play version. They do list it on their site http://www.syvecs.co.uk/products/s911/ for 996 and 997s.
AEM Infinity the last I read up on it was when I had my turbo E46 and was thinking of switching from my V1 to Infinity, but ended up going with ProEFI. Other than the price tag, it looked solid, just still infant for the E46 world at the time.

32Krazy, the AEM V1 system years ago did internal datalogging and it was damned awesome. Mine was setup so that if I went near WOT it would begin datalogging until I let out of it. Only a few megs of space but VERY highspeed logs that were great for diagnosing little issues. The new system uses a USB stick so it can hold a great deal more data and I assume it has the same trips to turn it on. Syveccs apparently logs internally too which is pretty attractive to me. It's got a good bit of onboard memory for this I believe and the datarate is high. The ProEFI requires a logger to do this which is added cost and it puzzles me as to why they did that although their hardware that logs and monitors looks pretty nice.
AEM does seem in it's infancy on this platform - been there done that with the Supra! Difference is this motor is a good bit more expensive and at their price point I believe I can buy a competitor product and have the benefit of more people's knowledge. <sigh> $1500 or $2K for a wiring harness? Seriously? I can understand someone wanting to get their R&D blood and sweat but at least be up-front about it. That just seems awful high to me. Hell I chaffed at paying $600 or so for the jumper harness I used on my AEM so I wouldn't have to clip wires!
DSCOF I've seen the deals that Undercover has run from time to time and since I'm in NOVA I don't think he's too far away. I've heard good things about the ProEFI and intend to take a look at their documentation and software if I can get it. Jason worked on the ProEFI and I've worked with him some in the past with the AEM. He may actually have been the tech that flew out to my place when I found a bug in their ECU firmware while beta testing. I wish AEM hadn't dumped their older support forum posts, the new forum is kinda' barren. Having to have additional hardware for the logging bugs me I have to admit.
Likewise I'll try to do the same with Syveccs. I've been reading an older manual I found for this system and honestly it's not Greek, feels a good bit like the AEM I was familiar with! The AEM system hid many things under the covers, sounds like Syveccs has most of it up front near as I can tell. AEM allowed you to customize menus if you wanted in their interface to keep the gritty details out of the way. I'll know more if I can get hold of the software and a basemap to tinker with. I've spoken to a few people who are fans of Syveccs but this system strikes me as being more costly. I may own a Porsche but I've not got money to burn by the bale
These guys seem to charge a good bit for their harness too.
FWIW, I understand the MANY benefits of going standalone. I also understand the potential downsides, not the least of which is being able to pass an OBD-II plug-in test in my state every few years which likely means swapping out or other voodoo. Figuring out which system can do what and where the quirks are is the trick - like the AEM only running one onboard wideband for instance. ProEFI and Syveccs both do better than this although ProEFI requires their own sensors which makes swapping back more difficult. I seem to recall the Syveccs can do up to 8 K-type EGT onboard which is a possible plus. Boost and traction control for both as well as anti-lag and launch, it's great to see that engine management has come so far. Programmable safeties are really good and I can only wish that we had E85 here as I'd be all over it. Lots to consider but I figured I'd throw the AEM out there as a contender and see who is playing with it - if anyone.
I may make some phone calls after the first of the year and talk to someone somewhat local about Syveccs who tunes it I'm told. The 112 ProEFI box is of interest too. Total cost all in is going to be a concern but having control is important to me and I like to tinker!

using a flex fuel sensor we can automatically switch into a meth/E85 map

the syvecs can also control meth injection and the toucan gives me 8 maps with varying traction control settings as well as Launch control, makes 1 bar in the workshop
Going to drop some 1100cc ASNU injectors in and fit my GT28 Tial turbos in january.

This is Incorrect; Bisimoto does run the AEM Infiniti, but BBi (King Kong) and EVOMS (Mayhem) both run ProEFI. A couple members here are also running ProEFI, most commonly tuned by Garth @ Undercover (prodigymb's SpoolBus, topgun's 1400 WHP+ 996, etc.).
Yumaverick is using Syvecs in his EVOMS/Mayhem setup, but AMS also uses Syvecs in their GTR builds so it wouldn't be a big surprise to see them use it in future high-power builds (the Porsche Alpha 9 + 10 packages both list stock DME tuning with a Greddy EBC). MegioN out in Russia is also using Syvecs on his setup too.
On another note, Merry Christmas everyone

the issue with this is that are more than a few sensors that help increase the ability to tune your car AND keep it safe that the factory setup just doesn't have. knock retard, emap,e85 analyzer are just a few. i run proefi and theres not a single light on my dash. i also have pasm, abs in working order. its all about the install and the quality of the tuner doing the wiring.
mit boost the can logger from proefi logs every parameter the computer sees constantly from the time the key is turned on until its turned off. you just slip a sd card into the back and it automatically starts the datalog. you can also run a male to male usb cable from the logger to a laptop and see live data or record for review later. of course a 15" laptop screen shows tons more than the logger but its a nice item to have. i use it for e85 content, knock, timing,hp/torque readings, gforce, clutch slip, the list goes on and on!
i haven't dialed it in completely but it looks like the proefi catalogs every parameter about every 1/10 of a second. its a mind boggling amount of data that for a layman like me can be a handful to sift thru! of course my tuner reads like it like neo in the MATRIX!!
