Weights on shifter level... Remove?

Saw in another thread where there were positive results with shifter feel by removing them.

Just wondered if there was more feedback out?

That was the first time I had heard about it.

No dice...even the remover that Slider used just made the whole bigger.

I cannot get those weights to move (mostly because I have no way of gripping them) and the screws are just completely rounded out.

I guess that clinches it, you really have to rotate the weights with vise-grips before trying to extract the screws. I just used normal-size vise-grips. It worked for top and bottom weights.

I just drilled out the screws. They aren't going back on very well though. Hopefully I like it. Lol!

Stan from gbox recommended removing the shift weights when I had a conversation with him. I used channel locks to loosne the weight. Definitely can feel what is going on with the shifts now. It does take more effort but I prefer it over the OEM feel.

What is the purpose of the weights? Lowering vibration?

To me, it seems to numb the feel of the mechanism. Now that the weights are off, you can feel more of what's happening on the other end through the shifter. I guess some people don't want to feel it. Definitely more banging around when the car is cold. You couldn't feel it (as much) with the weights on.

The purpose of the weights is to give the shifter a feeling of "mass" and thus make the shift less notchy since the shifter has more inertia going from gear to gear. The byproduct is the fact that this masks "feel" and crispness. Removing it give shifting action a more direct "connected" feel. The weights are NOT used by Porsche in their GT2/3/Cup cars..

Gbox removed the shift weights while installing the 2nd gear detent on my car. Definitely agree with others, taking them off gave a better feel, more connected & notchy.

Turns out I really like the feel without the weights.

Man, I think the 996 turbo is the best feeling stock shifter I've ever used. Coming from driving my notchy loud hard to move corvette, this one is so precise I don't think it's possible to miss a shift.
