Tial alpha 2871 compressor failure (pics)

3 month old turbos (less than 700 miles on them); was doing about 50 mph around 4-5k rpm (boosting). Heard a pop and thought I popped a hose off. Limped home and all the hoses are solid. Pulled driver side intake first and found fan blade pieces. Driver side compressor wheel intack but chewed up. Took passenger side intake off and found massive failure. We think that once the passenger side fan blew up, the driver side intake sucked the pieces up over the Y pipe.

wow that is a massive failure. I'm sure your aware this has likely reached the i/c and possibly the engine. need to drop the oil and cut the filter apart and search for internal damage as well

That would be pretty impressive if it could spit pieces all the way up and around through the convoluted intake piping! Fingers crossed that the intercoolers caught all of the trash and kept it out of the motor :-( I'd be changing the oil ASAP! Did it lose the nut on the compressor maybe?

Not finding very many metal fragments in the hoses which is concerning. I should be finding a crapload...wondering how much made its way past the ics. The whole intake system is gunna need a shakeout. Won't really know until I have the shop look at it. Was gunna do it myself but I don't have a lift tall enough to make everything easy plus if the engine needs a drop, it's beyond my comfort level.

That sucks man! So curious if the shaft separated/broke which caused the failure? Who knows right now. Had that happen to me once on my single turbo supra. Not fun. Good luck!

Hopefully the shop can get a to root cause - lubrication, balancing, pure luck(bad kind), etc. Let us know!

Wait where's that nut on the front side of the inducer? Did you find that too?
