PCCB front brakes... expensive suckers
Well my brakes have been squealing more than normal so I decided to check them out. I have PCCB and normally after some hard driving and racing etc. I've noticed they squeak for a day or two afterwards. Most recently they continued squeaking for days on end.
Not really sure how you can tell when ceramic brakes are wearing out because regular brakes will start to squeak, these squeak often. Just using a flashlight and looking them over I can see the front pads look really thin, passenger's side especially.
A quick search shows $611 for front pads. That seems crazy. I'd heard you can get pads for PCCB brakes for around $150 but now looking around I'm not seeing that.
Where should I be looking and what's an acceptable "normal" price for these pads?
Thanks

They are expensive to operate. You should be glad its not the PCCB rotor that your replacing.
Based on my knowledge, your 04 should still have Gen I PCCB. Most people that track their cars with PCCB switch them out to the steel rotors...my opinion.

Well, if you don't track your car / racing.. How many miles are on these pads? Based on my reading, PCCB pads should be changed out when they are half worn. I like to know about miles because my car came with them too
Years ago when looking for a TT, I had a PPI done on an '05 TT S model, it needed front pads a radiator hose and another small item. I was quoted nearly $2K parts and labor. The most expensive was the PCCB front pads. A pair of front rotors are nearly $12K.

you gotta remember, these cars were the most expensive Porsche you could buy in the early to mid 2000's. My brother had an '04 Cab TT with an MSRP of $176K! It was the most highly optioned Porsche I'd ever seen. It was originally special ordered by a pro athlete. There is little difference from $130K to $200K for a special car for that makes millions a year. They order what they think is cool at the time. That's why Porsche can price the X50 package at several thousand dollars, also the PCCB brakes at a ridiculous price. It's about the cool factor and bragging rights in the bar, neither make any difference in the real world as far as which car is faster or which one would brake better in a street or canyon racing scenario. The one with a driver having 10% more ability would win every time. My opinion!

I researched all this very heavily in the 10 months I was looking for a TT. I liked the yellow calipers and the "trick" PCCBs looks wise but decided I wanted a car that did not have them. I didn't want to make the choice between contributing to my IRA that year or maintaining my brakes on my weekend car.
I see they make normal pads for steel rotors that fit in the yellow PCCB calipers. I might look into something like that.
I did find these pads for PCCB brakes for $146

I called them up and they're not stocked in the store but could order them.
On the plus side I *think* you're already set for 350mm rotors and just need 997 rotors and some pads. The 997 rotors can be had somewhat cheaply and standard steel type pads aren't too hateful. Put those rotors in a box in bubble wrap for resale value perhaps
What about pads? I'm noticing the M450 (PCCB) option calipers take a different pad.
Been digging around some more and found two PCCB front pad options on rock auto.
One is $154 (listed in the daily driver section)

This set is $119 (listed in the performance/stopping power section)

Both are Centric brand. Anyone know anything about those?
Do a search for 350mm rotors and you'll find a wealth of information, I've tried to collect part numbers for rotors and other parts in a spreadsheet but I'm not 100% on the rotors just yet as the 997.1 and 997.2 have different part numbers that I'm not SURE are interchangeable. Sebro appears to make a decently priced steel rotor though. Pads are made for sure but others can likely best help on that question, I do know that those calipers are desirable though!
PCCB has a different pad formulation, don't use steel based compounds without verifying safety with PCCB disc.
You could also just swap on 997.1TT steel discs with any 996 GT2/3 pads...used PCCB pads work great
