Update: The shifter is in, it fits perfectly. The throws are longer and less notchy. I really believe the jury is still out on my final opinion. The B&M SSK throws were super short and somewhat notchy. So it's a trade off, more notchy; shorter throw. Less notchy; longer throw. As far as the feel, it felt pretty much like my stock Gt2 shifter felt. I think the major difference was the construction of the unit and not the feel of the unit itself. Some of the 997 shifter components are metal where the 996 are plastic. I have not ruled out putting the short shifter back on and trying to make some adjustments to smooth it out. Overall, it was definitely a learning experience. You will have to try it for yourself to see if it really makes a difference and how much you like it. If I go back to the SSK, pm me if you're interested in a very slightly used 997 Gt3 shifter.

9Eleven,
When you describe the throws as being longer and less notchy, you comparing it to your SSK, right? How would you say it compares to the stock 996TT shifter...if it hasn't been too long since you have used one. Any idea?

Yes compared to the SSK, the throws are longer and smoother. The longest feeling throw in comparison is 2nd gear. That is where you can really feel the longer shift. I can only compare the shift feel to my Gt2 stock shifter. The feel from what I remember before the installation of the SSK is literally identical to the shift feel of my stock Gt2.

Is is similar to a stock 996tt shifter in throws?
Or the GTx cars have a different shifter with shorter throws?

Let me know if you want to sell it. I wouldn't mine doing a comparison to my x50 shifter.

Great thread. Thanks for the update 9Eleven. I just installed the B&M SSK, and although I love the throw length, it's a bit notchy. Interested to hear your how you like / dislike the GT3 setup over time.

Cheers-
Scott

Guys, I had my guy Vince at Gulf Performance install this after seeing this thread. I ordered it from Suncoast with my wholesale account (ironically a few dollars more than Sunset in Oregon) but Rick is top notch over at Suncoast. Anyways, I had Vince install it yesterday. The throws are definitely shorter than the stock 996TT. I can't compare it to the B&M but I can see what 9eleven is saying about it not being as short as an SSK however it's so smooth etc that I wouldn't think of going B&M over this if the B&M is as notchy as everyone says.

I drove her pretty hard again today. Although the shift throws are slightly longer, they require less effort. So, if we are getting a SSK to reduce the time it takes to shift gears, are we really accomplishing this with the SSK? I feel that the shifts with the 997 Gt3 shifter are faster because the shift is faster (less effort, less resistance).

The SSK does have a shorter throw, but I think this reduction is canceled out by the amount of restriction between shifts. If you are buying the SSK strictly on feel alone, then I can agree with your decision. If you are buying it because of a perceived quicker shift, I think you may be fooling yourself. Still trying to decide what is best; I guess a few more days of hard driving may be the answer.

911even, I gotta say I really like it. The feel of it is really nice. I never drove a 996tt with a b&m so I can't say although I drove an e46 m3 with a b&m and I didn't like it at all (very notchy) and I heard the same for the 996tt.

I can't answer that question. I have never owned or driven a 996tt. I do believe that the Gt shift throws are reduced by 20 percent over a stock tt, but I'm not sure.

I had mine installed on Friday. I can only compare it to the stock 996tt shifter, but it feels as though the throw is about 15/20 percent shorter. More importantly, I also think the actual shifting motion is much, much smoother. I felt the stock shifter was a little sloppy at times. Especially, between 2nd and 3rd. No notchiness at all. Very precise. In all, I'm happy with the move.
