So, 997 GTx shifter is longer and more solid than 996 GTx shifter? I drove friend's 996 TT and shifter is definately longer than my factory 996 GT3 one.

Nobody has made a comparison between the 997 and 996 GT3 shifters yet.

So far we have:
997 GT3 shifter is longer and smoother than the SSK.
997 GT3 shifter is shorter and smoother than the 996TT stock shifter + appears more robust.

I think what we need is some throw measurements. I realize that completely misses the "feel" point, but I'd really like to know where the GT3 shifters fit in as compared to tt, GT2, and SSK. I'll post up the 1-2 and 2-3 throws from my SSK in a few minutes.

Thanks for clearing that up. I believe that the 996gt and the 997gt stock shifter throws are identical in length. The main difference between the two are some of the components on the 997gt shifter are metal rather than plastic. I owned a 996Gt3 before the 2 and to the best of my recollection, the throws on the 997gt shifter are identical to the 996gt shifter. As I said, when you install the B&M SSK you will really feel a difference in throw length, but in my case, you also suffer in shift feel.

Just ordered one from Sunset. They have none in stock and are getting it from Germany.

i must be missing something but ill ask anyway, why would one choose this over the stock short shift kit available for the 996TT? mine is really smooth, i had a 300zx TT with the stillen ssk, now that was notchy.

Cost, feel. Both are different. Cost is obviously less. Feel remains to be seen, but I'm betting (with my wallet) that it's smoother.

Personally, I needed an OEM shifter, so this was superior to spending $400+ for the Tequipment 996TT shifter.

Installed the 997 GT3 shifter in my 996TT yesterday and it is definitely shorter than stock. This shifter should have come in the car in the first place. It is definitely not short compared to other cars, but far better than the ridiculously long 996TT shifter. I think it is enough for me (esp since I was so used to the stock one). If I decide I want shorter I will do the rear short shift kit. That might be a perfect combo.

is it a do it yourself job? how long did it take? easier or harder than a b+m kit with linkage only?

Yes, it is DIY. I don't recall how long it took, maybe an hour. Hardest part is R/R the console. Much easier than the B&M kit as this requires no modification to anything...it is plug-n-play.

The 997 GT3 shifter is the same as the 987 Boxster, Caymen, 997 Carerra, and the 997 Turbo.

Standard Shifter: 997-424-010-00 About $205.00

Short Throw Shifter: 997-424-983-00 About $490.00

The 996 and 986 model vehicles are different. However, you can install the "new style" shifters to the 996 and 986 cars. Listed above and preciously stated.

I just had the 997 assembly installed on my 996tt too...have not spent too much time yet behind the wheel but it is noticeably shorter (but not as short as the shift kit). Mine is a little notchy but the gear changes are very positive (so am confident about when it is in gear and what gear I am in)...which is what I wanted. The OEM shifter not only is longer but also sloppier which I didn't like after the first mile in the car.

Will be at Lime Rock soon so am looking forward to how I like it on the track.

Those of you who are considering it, just go and drive a 997...it will feel pretty much the same after it is installed in a 996.

I installed the 997 GT3 shifter 997-424-010-00 also, real easy to do. In comparison to the 996TT when in an odd numbered gear the shifter is pretty vertical, with the old one it was way forward. When in the even numbered gears I think it comes back to where the old shifter came back (real approximations), so all in all a noticeably shorter shift, smooth and feels positive, not a great big oar like movement as before..

For those still interested in doing this mod, I have a couple of 997 stock shift towers available for sale, for $110 shipped in 48 states. Shift tower comes with adjustment tool for correct installation. PM me for more info or with any questions.

So, if you get a 997 shifter for a 996, do you have to use a 997 shift ****? I like the round ball type **** much better in the 997's..
