IMS Bearings go bad more frequently in older low-milage 996's. They are meant to be driven. I daily drive mine with it lowered (I must avoid certain dips and bumps in the reoads here in Syracuse, NY, YELLOW (attracts A LOT of attention), lightweight flywheel (harder to clutch), enlarged throttle body (louder exhaust note). Love driving it - my mechanic says "keep the RPM's up" so that the motor maintains good oil pressure. I don't drive it in winter, but love, love, love this car as my daily driver.

2001 996 C2 with77,000 and still going strong. Spent $3500 going through the engine, new clutch, IMS, belts, filters, water pump, etc. LNE IMS upgrade, Bilstiein Pss9's, 19" DCR 3 piece wheels, custom GT3 front bumper, Euro rear bumper / de bumperetted, gundo hack PSE exhaust mod, LNE 160 deg thermostat, LNE spin on filter, Amsoil Euro 5W-40 every change. Runs hard and I too keep the rpms up...can't help that. Cannot decide if I want to chip her or not? Too much for the old lady? Why mess with something that is going good?

I've had my '99 for one and a half years. Purchased with 128,000 miles now has 138,000 miles. Change oil every 3k-5k miles along with filter. Have had no problems with it since I've owned it. The previous owner took meticulous care of it. Had the entire front end 3M clear wrapped, including headlights. I drive it more than my '03 Z06 which has 39,000 miles. Both cars in pristine shape.

93K, but not without some problems...

I purchased the car 2 years ago... 2002 996 coupe 2 with sport-factory Aero package & fixed rear wing...

It had 60k on it when i bought it...

60k service completed = $650

78k installed new clutch (OEM Sach's disc w/AASCO light-weight flywheel upgrade and new RMS and IMSS = $2250

85k service completed = $300

88k the water pump started leaking, replaced it = $858

90k replaced both post cat O2 sensors = $310 (DIY)

93k the Air-Oil Separator Coolant intake port started leaking = $850

I drive the car daily, and I live in Atlanta, GA... It has been really hot here in Atlanta this summer and a lot of stop & go traffic with the A/C blowing, so I am sure that contributed to accelerated aging of cooling system components... I will be purchasing a cheap commuter car next year so I stop putting miles on the 911...

Best advice = find a good Porsche mechanic that will do the work for less than the dealer, or on the side for cash... Also, drive the 911 as often as possible, but preferably not as a sole source of transportation... Get a beater for your daily driver...

I can't bring myself to drive mine as a DD. I had to use the car for a week every once and I about cried by the end of the week. I love toys and have a few of them but, my Porsche is my dream car. I only drive it when I get a screaming urge to be behind the wheel. I do drive it hard though when I do take it out. My father is the same way with his Porsche. Both cars just sit in our storage bay collecting dust lol. I drove the car twice this summer so far and have it all pulled apart right now getting upgrades. So, I wont even be able to take it back out until next summer. During the winter I crank the heat in the garage and let the car sit. I just go down and start it up every other week.

2000 Carrera 95K on it I have owned the car for 5 months now. It is my DD I put about 136 miles on it a week. I say 30 of those miles are in the Malibu hills, I reside in the LA area and drive the tires off this thing everyday. I let it warm up in the morning on a cold start for a couple of minutes. Never climb the rpm's past 3k until the temp reads 180. After that she lives in the 4k range with some 6k spikes. As of last week I started smelling some burning oil on the exhaust, taking it in next week to get that checked out. Plus I'm going to do my scheduled maintenance since im 6500mil since my last maintenance.
