California Window Tint Law...what are my options?
California Window Tint Law...what are my options?
Just got a ticket for speeding. Guess the cop didn't like me so he wrote me up for tinted front windows and no front license plate. What are my options as far as the window tint? I would hate to remove the tint and have it re-done again.
TIA,
John

Thanks for the info. I've already checked into that. There is no medical exemption in the state of California, although many of my friends told me the same thing about the doctor's note. With regards to driving another car to the court, that's a very interesting story.
Anybody else wanna give their opinions/suggestions? Thanks again. John.

Anybody else wanna give their opinions/suggestions? Thanks again. John.at the end of the day its not a moving violation so pay the fine and be careful next time tell the cop that u are planning on removing them at a professional shop that weekend...good luck
Omar, I agree with you 100%. They just want the money, since we're so broke in CA. I do believe the violation needs be to corrected and signed off at a station before the court date. Not too sure what they will do if i just show up in the court w/o doing anything. Plus, i would have to pay the no front license plate violation at the same time, which can be easily fixed in a few minutes... Dilemma, dilemma...
Noticed you're in SD & couldn't believe it. My experience has usually been that cops are pretty lenient in SD unless you look really ghetto &/or really Mexican (I'm not being racist, I am Mexican, I'm referring more to "homies" or those driving "TJ style cars," lol. Not trying to offend anyone, just saying the truth). He must've been in a bad mood or something, haha. Would you mind sharing where in SD you got the ticket? ... My car has really dark tinted windows (not sure how much % since I bought the car like that), I have NO license plates (no, not even in the rear), my exhaust is too loud, & my driving is very "spirited." I also park in the red zone all the time when I stop by my stores, & one of my stores happens to be ACROSS THE STREET from a police station. One time I was getting off in the red zone & a cop pulls up next to me & rolls down his window, & I was thinking "oh great, a ticket" but he just said "that's a nice car you got there, enjoy" & left to go into the station, lol... Another time leaving my store I got pulled over & the officer asked me why I have no license plates, I just told him "I just had a new license plate bracket installed & I haven't got around to putting the plate on," he responded "oh, alright, it's just we never see cars like these in this area, & since it had no plates, I assumed it was stolen. But you don't look like you're from around here, what exactly are you doing in this neighborhood? Are you lost?" (one of my stores happens to be in Logan Heights, lol), so I told him "I work here" & he says "oh, you must be _______'s son, from the jewelry stores, right?" I just said "yup" & he just told me "nice car, drive safe & watch out, it's pretty dangerous here." I didn't even get asked for registration, license, nothing. Maybe I have luck.
... Anyway, as for the tint, if you can't find the same car with no tint to borrow & get it written off, I know a lot of people that are pretty good & will hook it up if you need. I know one guy that'll come to you & do it while you're working or at home, etc. He's one of my employee's boyfriends... As far as the license plate, tell them it fell off or something, if you happen to get a nice judge, he'll just dismiss it.

For the front, it is 70% VLT (visible light transmission). This type of film actually looks like there is nothing on the windows at all. VLT on just glass is 85%.

I have tints and no front plate and honestly it has gotten me out of a lot of speeding tickets. I have a very clean record so when the cop pulls me over for speeding and see's i have a clean record they just end up giving me a tint ticket or a ticket for no front plate. It's worked for me for a long time. Though a cop pulled my friend over one time and he made him pull the tints off right in front of him,Jersey cops can be big dicks sometimes........

Go to court and ask the judge for traffic school. Ask him if he'll dismiss the other two counts if you complete traffic school. Sometimes that works.
the license plate and tint are "fix it" tickets. a judge doesn't decide your case. you go to the courthouse but its a diff. dept that takes care of it. worst case scenario they'll walk out to your car with you and check before signing you off and making you pay $10 per violation. in most cases they'll assume you've fixed the violation and sign you off without even going outside to look at your car.
CA law for tint is none whatsoever allowed on the front of your vehicle. there are companies that make films that they claim are legal but only because they're so light the tint is barely perceptible at all, defeating the purpose of getting tint.
CA law for the license plate is that you have to have one front and rear.
in both cases its very rare that someone is pulled over JUST for a fix it ticket unless the officer is stereotyping (which is common). most of the times fix it tickets are added on to major offenses like speeding either for safetys sake or to meet the cops quota (which is common).

that's why it's called a "fix it" ticket here in CA, things like broken tailights, no front license plate, front tint are all grouped under this category and as long as you fix them then there's no crazy fine
last time i got a fix it ticket was about 3 years ago for no front license plate, went to the police station (or courthouse i can't remember) and walked out paying less than $20 after all fees and such

usdmej, thx for the input. i prolly will go into the police station in a different car. if they decide to check, i'll just tell them it's in the shop or something. hopefully, that works.
I guess I'm not the only one. I just got pulled over yesterday and the only reason was fix it tickets. Each fix is a $25 fine. Not only tinted windows and no front license plate. I also got tinted taillights, tinted headlights(even though they were just covers that pop right off) and a clear plastic cover over my rear license plate(what?). I was shocked to say the least. It was SD Sherrif, I tried to talk to him and he just acted like he didn't care and the law is the law.
I've heard from a number of people that a doctor's note will get out of it... I did some digging and there is no such exemption in california. Lots of other states have them, but not CA.
I always consider a fix-it ticket (well, a non-smog related fix it) to be a win, because it is not points on my record.

SMK, i'm with you. Not too long after i started this thread. I got pulled over again with my other car. It turned out my rear license plate does not have a 2009 sticker. We renewed the car, but DMV never gave me a new sticker and all the paperwork! I told the police to check the record on his computer. Instead he gave me a ticket for an expired registration. wth! I think CA is really in need of some $$. You're right about the $25/fine. It's gone up. I went to pay my fine today, one for expired registraton, one for no license plate, and one for tinted widonw. I was hoping they will dismiss my tinted window w/o inspection. They told the citation has to be signed off first.... So just to let you know that we may really need to take the the tint off before we show up at their door
