Guidance on oil change needed
Hi All,
I am preparing to do my 1st oil change on my 996 Cab, and was hoping someone could give me a mini walk through. I have changed the oil on my BMW, and Jeep, so I know the base concepts.
I have 9 Qt's of the Mobil 0W-40 and a new filter.
I was told to change the filter first, then drain the oil, then refill oil.
Where I need guidance is in the following areas:
1) Is this the correct order to do things
2) Where is the filter located (top or bottom) a pic would be helpful
3) Where is the drain plug (again pic would be helpful)
4) Is there the equivalent of a Chilton or Haynes Manuel for the 996?
Thanks in advance for helping me get "closer" with my new car.
Jessica

my procedure, whether right or wrong, is to back the car up a set of ramps and drain the oil first (the drain plug is right in the middle of the large flat bottom of the engine sump). You'll need a metric allen wrench. Then I remove the oil filter (vertical black cylindrical can on the gearbox side of the engine). You'll need the appropriate wrench to do so, perhaps one you already have may work. I wipe out the inside of the oil filter can with a lint free rag, install the new 'O' ring on the can, install a new filter in the can, fill it with oil, and reinstall. I figure this avoids the time it takes for the oil pump to fill the filter. You may or may not need to install a new washer on the oil pan drain plug. If it looks fine, I hit mine with some sandpaper and reinstall it. Sorry but I don't have any pics.
Get a big container to catch the oil, it is 9 qts+ and it comes out fast. I had a drainpan that had a small opening on top to let the oil into the container and it could not keep up with the flow from the engine. use an open top drain pan to avoid spills.
Thanks for the quick responses. I will be doing the change on a lift, and it appears that everything (except the re-filling of the oil) is done from the underside. Glad I asked as I was previously told that the filter was topside. I would have wasted a great deal of time looking for it in that little engine bay :-) I am planning to do this Friday...wish me luck!
I did my oil change a couple of weeks ago and I only have one additional recommendation - order and install the spin-on oil filter adapter from Flat 6 Innovations. The spin-on adapter allows you to use regular one-piece can-type high performance filters.

I just completed the oil change and loaded it up with 8 Qts, and now I am running the level check.....it says it will take 58 minutes. Wowser! I figured I would start with 8 run the level check and then add number 9 as needed after the level check.
This was sooooo much easier than my Audi TT. Thanks for the guidance all.

I always check the oil with the dipstick after an oil change to get it topped off. Otherwise I use the dash display. Glad it went well. It's the easiest car I've ever changed the oil on too.

If you don't have an owner's manual, join renntech.org and download it - shows where the dipstick is and other good info.
What is this adapter you speak of? What's the difference between a performance oil filter and the porsche OEM filter?
I wondered the same thing......so I simply Googled "spin-on oil filter adapter from Flat 6 Innovations".......all the answers are there.

Thanks. I did the same thing after I posted. I'm so silly. It's looks like a nice option - I have always been a little timid when pulling the old plastic one off and always wondered why Porsche designed such a weak link into this auto. No need to wonder anymore, just replace it and done!
