Clutch Noise?

Hi,

I had a new clutch installed at 68K, and my mileage is at 69K. Just yesterday, while driving on the traffic-enriched local roads in VA, I noticed a sqeaking noise everytime I pressed down the clutch. Didn't hear the problem before. I think it could be the cold weather (32F), but I had been driving for over an hour.

No suggestions/hints to what it could be?

Thx,
lakhoon

Is the noise present for as long as you're holding the clutch down, or does it only make it WHILE you're pushing the pedal down?

It only makes noises when I push the pedal down. It's very intermittent. Sometime it makes noises sometimes it doesn't. Don't think it's a big issue, but was curious.

Thx!

It sounds like a throwout bearing. I've seen this happen on several 996s. You probably have a bit of time before it becomes an issue, but it may eventually cause more damage -though there's not a whole lot else to break in that area-.

Put the car on a lift and see if the sound is coming from the bell housing. If so, probably the throwout bearing. However, I'd be surprised if this wasn't replaced when you had the clutch done.

I hope you guys aren't correct! If so, I will be really pissed off! I had nothing but good things for the guys who replaced my clutch!

If the noise only occurs as the pedal is being pressed down and does not continue when the pedal movement stops, it is not the throwout bearing. Other common, but not normal noises include a sqeaky pedal assembly as well as a noisy release lever. Pedal noise will come from footwell and release lever noises from the bell housing.

First identify where the noise is coming from. Open the door to hear it from the bell housing.

The above post is correct, for clarification, it's only the throwout bearing if you hear the noise while the pedal is down, and if it's coming from the engine/transmission area. If you only hear it while "moving" the pedal, it's likely the release arm in the bell housing, the pedal itself, the clutch master or slave cylinder. You should be able to hear all of the above other than the release bearing w/the car off also...

For a noisy clutch slave pivot, reach up un-clip the slave hardline get a 1/4 ratchet and 6in. extension and a swivel 13mm, un-bolt the 2 slave cylinder bolts pull it out of the bell housing and put some anti-seize on the end of the rod, re-install the slave. For noisy pedal assembly grab a flashlight stick your head under the dash, remove the plastic heater ducting, use your hand to push down on the clutch pedal and flash the light at the clutch pedal over-center spring ( it looks like a round barrell about the size of a spool of thread ) in the tail end you'll see a hole you want to use a cotter pin or something that fits in the hole to keep it from flying apart, towards the passenger side of the car you'll see an e-clip where it snaps into the clutch pedal, remove it and the pin and it will pop out of the pedal then kind of twist and slide to remove the over-center spring, once you have it out use some grease to lube the pivot points then re-install
