grinding into 1st
Well, I drove a "stick" for 3 years b4 getting my current Tip and I remember the manuals always cautioning against shifting into 1st at more than 5mph. I wonder why you'd want to do that in the 1st place. Isn't the accepted practice to have a car stopped b4 shifting into 1st or reverse?
Please correct me if I am wrong.

I have been driving a stick for 20+ years so it's not a new thing to me but I guess I have the bad habit of pushing in the clutch, coasting up to my stop (stop sign, light, etc.) while putting the car into 1st in anticipation of the pause (or stop) and then taking off again....... Only thing that bugs me is that I have done this same thing while driving dozens and dozens of other stick shift cars....... I hope you guys are right and it is driver error! The car has done it since I bought it so I have gotten used to it but always wondered if it was a problem or not.
I highly recommend breaking the habit before you grind down the synchros or a gear and have metal shavings all over your gearbox.

The good news is, you don't need to spend $$ fixing anything.
Good luck, TK
This is common, i wouldn't worry about it. I would say that at 10mph there is no point for the car to even be in 1st gear, i would be in 2nd if i needed to. But i usually have the car in neutral as i come to a stop. Then as i am breaking less then 5mph ill switch it into 1st gear about 1sec before i completely stop.

Absolutely NOT normal. Hava a qualified tech look at it. Mine does not grind what-so-ever and I do occasionally downshift to 1st.
Had many cars in past and never had a grind while trying to downshift to 1st. 1st just won't engage if the RMP's are too high! Regardless of mileage, this is not normal.

Start by changing the gear oil. I know Porsche lists a service interval that's twice the mileage on the car, but that's a joke. If a Porsche is driven hard on the street the gear oil should be changed every 12-15k miles, or once a year.
My car has 56K miles, has had the gear lube changed, and I can down shift into first at 10-15 mph with no grind/problems. Don't do it that often, but I can without any issues. Try changing the gear lube and see. If not I think you may have a bad synchro.
