Pop goes the P-Car

Occasionally, as I roll off a stop sign in first gear, I hear a popping sound from the engine bay . I suspect it has something to do with an engine that has not completely unwound (still revving rpms) as I come to a complete stop, and then quickly shift into first to resume my travels. The sound is similar to that of an aluminum can expanding or contracting. A strange sound which has me curious. Has anyone experienced this sound? Or, better yet, can someone inform me of what exactly causes this strange sound?

Thanks for your concern. However, it occurs intermittently. I can go days without incident. I was hoping for information that would lead me in the right direction with an appropriate DIY remedy.

Thank you, 02TX996Cab, mjp111569. Starting to make sense. I have bottomed out on the driveway on a few occasions. Time to take a peak.
