headlights do not turn on immediately

Sometimes takes up to a minute and several attempts to turn the switch on and off before the lights come on. Any ideas??

If it is one headlamp -- probably the ignitor for that headlamp.

If it is both headlamps, then it's likely the headlight switch. Same thing happened to me. I'd turn on the headlights and it would seem as if the car was thinking about it for a bit -- then they'd come on. Classic symptom. Replaced the headlamp switch -- solved the problem immediately, no recurrence. Rennlist & Renntech have write-ups on the procedure. Took me about 45 minutes with regular hand tools.

Here's another thread with details. https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...e-replace.html

While waiting for the switch to arrive in the mail I tried the electronics cleaner method and that has cured the problem for now. I'll put the new switch in once I get it, but at least i can drive around at night in the meantime.

Q: the DIY instructions mention removing the battery terminals for the headlight switch replacement. I thought that any time you removed the battery terminals it would require resetting the ECM / computer. Is this the case?

If so, could you use one of those 9V battery "maintainers" in the lighter socket?

When you pry the switch off from the socket you expose a lot of electrical contacts. If you are using a conducting pry tool (aka screwdriver) I can see a possibility for shorting something out. That is why you want to disconnect the power completely. Or you could use a non-conducting tool while leaving the battery connected (which is what I did.)

I have the same problem now :-( unfortunately it will take some time before the switch arrives. Did you just spray the electronic cleaner on the metal contacts or dismantling the switch further was necessary? Was it a complicated job to clean it? And did this fix last?

The cleaned light switch is still working fine after 2 and 1/2 years. No dismantling required. I never did install the new switch.
