Difficult to put into gear
Difficult to put into gear
Hello all,
I've tried searching and there are couple of thread that have been somewhat similar but not exact.
I'm having difficulties putting the car into gear. Easiest gear is first gear. What I mean by difficulty is that it seems like I'm forcing it in. All gears are the same. The car has a short shifter.
I read in the other threads to adjust cabling or change the fluid.
What fluid should I go with? Is this something I can change myself?
What about the cables?
If something is wrong or could go wrong what would it be and how much will it cost me?
New clutch??? Transmission???

. Usually fluid associated symptoms are gears jumping out by them self while driving ( too low fluid) or simply its wrong fluid. Change the fluid to Porsche specs and take it from there. Gears behave same way while driving and stationary ( engine off)?
If you have a short throw shifter installed I would certainly start there. How many miles are on the car and what year? Short Throw Shift Kits (specially the 'cheap' ones) have a tendency to wear rather quickly causing the car to be harder and harder to get into gear... Even worse if you still have the OE plastic contection between the cable and the lever it can, and enivitably will, break and leave you stranded on the side of the road. Evolution Motorsports has an aluminum replacement for this, definately worth doing while you are adjusting the cable to correct your throw.
My money is on the shifter cables being out of alignment. Since they had to be removed for the transmission rebuild/replacement I bet they are not in the correct placement on the threaded sections at the shifter base. Unfortunately the Porsche factory alignment tool does not work with short shift kits. Do you have access to the original shifter where you could use the tool to get the cables properly aligned?
No I don't have the factory shifter.
Does anyone know of a reputable shop that can take a look at this for me thats not going to cost me an arm and a leg?
