Cat failure - suggestions on replacements?

The mechanic found a code for one bank of cat failures and said it would cost $2,400 to replace with factory parts. Ugh.

I thought of dealing with it until the car was up for smog, but the rattling sounds and engine light are annoying. I found Fabspeed and Speedtech replacement sport cats and pipe ranging from $950 - $1,500. They claim to boost HP & torque, but even if it's true I don't anticipate much difference.

Any suggestions on replacing these? I'd prefer factory, but the cost is $2K+. I found the Speedtech part for $950 but it's from Fullybolted.com that's a new company with no bricks and mortar. Mechanic says to go with factory cats.

I lot of people have put Fabspeed and Awe Cats on their 997's.

Best mod to add power.

Can't see why a 996 would be any difference.

Take a look at our new "X" pipe for the 996 - available catted or catless. Best sound improvement for the 996 - sounds a lot like the GT3.

Here's a link: PM for details

If anyone is interested in factory cats I've been holding onto some for emission testing purposes but might consider selling.

I have a set of the Fabspeed cats. They seem to add a bit of power and sound (in combination with the headers and mufflers). I've never had any problem with the part and the company is a good to work with.

Have you taken it in for Emissions yet? Just curious if you have the copy of the emission levels with these?

Thanks for the help. I need to talk with the muffler shop about the possibility of direct replacement of the cats. I'm looking for the most cost-effective way of managing this issue since the car is already more than potent enough on the track for my skills.

Unless this is a specialty shop or they are gonna be flying under the radar, a lot of places rather play it safe and only install direct replacement cats. Some shops tend to stray away from anything performance oriented or aftermarket when it comes to cats in fear of getting hit with any emission violations which can carry a heavy fine. Obviously if you diy then it's a moot point.

Only a catalytic converter specifically certified by CARB to be a direct replacement on the 996tt can be fitted to polution controlled vehicles in California.

That being said, I don't think any company has an EO Certification for a Porsched 996tt. I know we don't. Factory is probaby your only legal option.

I was in the same position as you (also with a 2002 911). I had to change broken cats, and really just wanted something cheaper than stock.

I went with Fabspeed X-pipes and love the product. I've had them for a while now, and I have had no problems or complaints. I would buy them again in a heartbeat.

The only thing I didn't do was ask for some type of discount for being a 6speedonline member. It wouldn't have been much, but it may have covered shipping or something.

By the way, the sound is only slightly different (and better) than stock. There is also slightly more power. But I am comparing them to my broken stock cats. So the comparison may not be fair.

Let me know if you have any questions. (I have no ties to Fabspeed or any retailer, etc.)

if your car have less than 80,000 miles, under federal law, you are entitled to free OEM replacement of defective cats.

Unfortunately, there is a year limit in addition to the mileage limit. 7 years on my 2002 I believe it's increased to 8 years on later models.
