I wouldn't go over 19". It changes the handling, weight, spinning mass ....LOTS. Plus, at 19" you're already at a 30 series on back. They also fill the hole quite nicely. Check out the DCR Laguna Seca's for the benz. They are sweet on Ebay I think.

There are lots of opinions on this one. Many people run 19s and seem to be happy. I've seen a 996 with 20s also. It's really a personal choice, and how you intend to use your car should impact your decision. As an example, the ideal wheel size for the track is probably not the same as the ideal wheel from an aesthetic standpoint.

Personally, I wouldn't go bigger than 18, but that's my opinion. The 996 wasn't ever sold from the factory with anything bigger than 18 inches in diameter, so for anything larger you'll have to go with other people's recommendations (as opposed to Porsche's recommendations) on proper offset, tire size, etc.

When I had the PPI done on my '03 C4S, the PO had 19" turbo wheels on it. The shop noted in the PPI that having wheels different from what Porsche recommends on an AWD car is not good for the AWD system.

Something to consider. I plan to stay with the factory turbo twists, but that's just me. I've never been a big aftermarket wheel fan for my street cars.

18 is the ideal size for a 996. Porsche wound up re-engineering the 997 to take 19s. The suspension is beefed up for the added stresses.

I looked at this wheel upgrade closely before deciding on BBS LM's. I went with 18"x 8.5 front and 11 rear with 56 offset on both. Stayed away from 19" because of ride quality and NJ roads are just too bad. I went with forged for the same reason, extra protection on bending the rim.
Very happy with my choice and they fit standard suspension with no rubbing or geometry issues. take a look at my before and after photos in my garage. Let me know if you need further info.
