Short Shift kit

Hey guys,

I've been looking at several different shifters and need some advice from the guys that already have them installed.

I have read that most of these are the same height as the stock shifter... im looking for something not only with a redction in throw, bt also a shorter length. Can anyone help guide me in the right direction?

I have my eye on the Agency Power shifter, but see many mixed reviews.

Most short shifters are probably gonna be ok assuming the shift cables are setup correctly.

However many introduce some level of notchiness that some people are not willing to put up with. Some have been able to remedy some of that by installing aftermarket shift linkage along with the ssk unit.

The 997 oem optional ssk is suppose to be pretty good in both feel and short throws.

If you want a reduction in the actual physical lever height, you will probably have to cut it down.

the rennline **** is countersunk and thus lowers the shift height.
i have the rennline ****
I don't know of any other **** that is countersunk but the gt3 **** looks like its the lowest OEM ****.

I love my Porsche 997 Short Shifter (SSK). Better than anything else I have tried...

I bought the Schnell kit above because it was cheaper than the alternatives by a wide margin. It came with a replacement linkage made of metal that I did not install because it seemed unnecessary. The stock one is extra-cheap looking plastic though.

It's great. That kit has been in my car for about 5 years now with no issues. I don't remember how the old shifter felt other than that the throw was WAY too long. I have no complaints. It certainly takes more effort to shift and might be notchier, but that is kind of the point.

I bought and installed the 997SSK a couple of weeks ago. It is one of the more expensive options, but i was able to install it myself. You get the whole unit and do not have to swap out any parts. I read the forums and decided it was the way to go, and im glad i did, not problems short and sweet shifting, and easy to install...plus is an OEM item you dont have to explain away later if you sell.

I have tried the standard 997 shifter, the 997 short shifter and the Schnell SSK. My favorite is the standard 997 shifter, it has about 15% shorter throw than the 996 shifter which suits me perfectly. The 997 short shifter has considerably shorter throw, but is still smooth and I could probably adjust to it given a little time. The Schnell SSK has too short throw and feels too notchy for my liking.

BJ,

Your description of the Schnell sold me! I like the stiff notchy feeling... sounds like it will feel like the old B&M ripper shifter for american cars.

I think this with the Rennline counter sunk **** fits the bill.

Thanks to all of the comments and opinion! You guys are great!

Ok, Schnell SSK with a shortend lever should have lots of both (stiffness and notchyness)

Please report your experiences if you decide to give it a go.

ok guys.... its in.. took about 1 1/2 hours. I hope i did the cables right. I marked them in multiple spots to check the throw in both up and down. It seems to shift the gears ok... Too late for a test drive so i'll update in the morning.

Fingers crossed.

Had to adjust the cable linkage a few times to get it just right, but think so far its a great combination. it feels heavy and precise, just as expected. Now if i could only find an e-brake handle that matches the ****... i cant stand the wood grain lever.
