iPad Mini in-dash install [996 MkII]
I am thinking of starting this install myself. It is difficult to see what the "current" parts list people are using. I am installing in a 03 car with the bose system. So to stick with the stock head unit, and be able to power an ipad 2 or up this is what i need...
Metra 40EU30
tranzit blu hf Universal ISFM2351
996.552.339.00-01C trim for the relocated ac controls
where is the best place to pull power from that can keep the ipad 2 charged?
the rest seems to just be time invested. Can anyone comment on how to use this setup for Bluetooth calling? Would I have to unsync the ipad then sync my phone when I want to make a call? Given the Bose system, it seems like my options are limited. Seems like it would be great to put separate DIY posts for the bose and non-bose systems.

So I got an iPad mini 4 installed. It's pretty awesome. I used a 12v to usb plug tapped into the cell phone wire everyone has been using. Otherwise, same parts as listed above.
The iPad is on iOS 9.3.3
Unfortunately it looks like activator doesn't support the new iOS yet.
What apps are you guys using? I just have waze on there so far...

Waze, Apple music, Google maps occasionally...
Used to use evernotes to sync info / lists everywhere, but with there latest change to a for-fee service when using more than two devices, I just finished migrating all my notes over to Apple Notes. Bye bye evernote for good.

Hi there.
I'm not sure if anyone is still following this thread, and I apologize about the length of my post, but I have a lot of questions. I have read through the whole thread and found it to be very informative.
Like PFBZ I have used my ipad in all my cars, usually with a RAM mount. BUT as my wife keeps complaining of the intrusion into her leg space
(I have a standard sized ipad) and its not aesthetically very pleasing, I have been inspired by this thread to try this ipad mini install in my, new to me, 2000 996.
I've been researching various things, including the jailbreak for the ipad, and it seems that there is not a jailbreak for the IOS 10 which all the new ipad mini 4s come with. Do you recommend I buy an ipad mini 3, or has anyone who has a mini 4 found a workaround to the ipad being turned on/off with the key?
I have attached a picture of my current setup. It also includes the Porsche CD changer in the front. Can anyone give me any advice as to what harnesses/equipment I may need? I was very surprised that Crutchfield, who I have used extensively over the years, could offer me absolutely no advice. Please tell me that our Porsche stereos or this install isn't so difficult that even the "experts" dare not venture there?

I'm thinking the Pioneer DEH-X8800BHS head unit, as it seems to be the only Pioneer unit that I can find with rear USB input (we have Pioneer head units in all our vehicles, that way it doesn't matter which one you are driving you will always know how to operate the stereo. And that makes my wife and I very happy
I have ordered a plastic trim to practice the trimming work that will be required, before cutting up a carbon fiber one. I'm not sure what speakers are being used in the system.
Although I'm reasonably adept at this sort of thing (I have installed at least 5 Pioneer upgrades in different vehicles, mostly German), I'm not a techno wizard, so don't necessarily use appropriate terminology or speak the techno language. Also unfortunately for me at the present, I'm working away from home,so I cannot just pop into the garage to check things out. My wife has to do that for me and she is in no way a technical person. She can follow very specific instructions (She took some of the pictures you see attached). Having said all that, any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for any responses in advance, as I know this thread started over 4 years ago and the last post was nearly a year ago.

Gentlemen,
I am not sure if this thread is still alive.
I did this install iPad Mini install years ago in my 2001 996 Turbo and love the functionality and the looks. I have upgraded the iPad in order to run the latest iOS but have never bothered to jailbreak my iPads.
At times I discharge the iPad and therefore have, as suggested in the thread, the cables routed so I can easily plug the USB from the iPad into a charger in the lighter socket. However, I finally tried to install a splitter like the Belkin lightning Audio + charge Rockstar https://www.belkin.com/lightning-aud...P-F8J198.html? but my Pioneer DEH-X9600BHS now says "not compatible" when I plug in the Belkin splitter. Apparently the Pioneer requires some data transfer the Belkin cable cannot handle.
Has anyone figured out how to charge the iPad from a separate source than the Pioneer headunit while keeping the Pioneer plugged into the iPad?
TIA, Ola

I removed my iPad last fall partly over this frustration and installed a CarPlay HU from AliExpress that matches the Porsche interior. It works perfectly and was an easy install. I like it much better than the iPad for the simplicity.
I started a thread over on the 986 forum and there is a link to a Rennlist thread concerning these HU's as well.
