Is this normal

Guys, this is my first Porsche, and I absolutely love the car, but there is one very annoying thing about it.

Every time I take it out some stupid punk want to race. Everything from G35s to 330s to Camrys, etc.

Last night it was a Civic! And the thing is we were in a relatively busy part of town and he left me at the light and drove like crazy through a pretty dangerous stretch where are multiple intersections and pedestrian crossings.

I mean come on, did he really think I would bother trying to race a Civic???

Not only is it annoying, but I'm really concerned that someone is going to get hurt. I don't even want to know what the stopping distance is for a Civic at 90-100mph.

I still have my 30-day tags on, will this die down after I get my plates? I'm really surprised, because there are lots of P-cars around here.

Do you think maybe people think "oh, it's just a regular Carrera, not one of those Carrera 4s, so I can take it." I gave a guy a ride, and he said "Man, this is fast. I can't even imagine how fast a Carrera 4 must be!"

It happens to me once in a while in my Carrera--I just ignore them.

In the 4 months I had my E55, it seemed like once a week some rice rocket would pull up at a light and rev the sh*t out of his engine, then screech away...I don't miss that!

Doesn't matter if you have a Porsche, Vette, BMW, or whatever, there's always some goof out there that wants to prove that his bargin econo box that he has personally outfitted with neons and a megafone exhaust will blow you away. It's a good thing you are easily goaded into street racing because there is clearly nothing to prove to these clowns.

Get used to it.

After a while you learn to ignore them!

it happens to me all the time. i get people in bmw's looking over and saying stuff like 'POS american car' or 'its an auto porsche? it sux' but people like that will do just about anything to intimidate you and would want to see nothing more then you launching the car infront of them so they can talk to their buddies about it. I try my best to ignore some comments but i wouldnt be able to sleep at night knowing that a civic driver called my vette an american piece of ****.

I get that all the time with the local Pep Boys super-car owners around here. I don't even fool with those guys. I also have the same thing with a lot of Corvette owners too. In fact, every new vette I've raced, I have beaten every time. I'm talking 1/4 mile and roll offs. Seems to me that the Z06 guys don't act like the other vette guys. I did meet up to one and he said that no way could he beat a Turbo. I said it's a C4S and it has no turbo.
It seems that Chevrolet is doing what Ford did to it's Cobras a few years ago by advertising gobs of horse power and not matching up to the performance. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not slamming the vette but, if I can beat a new stock vette in any race something is wrong.

I'm astounded that there are any Corvette owners who drive over 55. Most are full of grey haired gimmers crawling around - at least that's the case here in Indy. When I lived in Tampa I'd get a little more interest - not much here though.

However, I would be surprised if a C4 is waltzing away from a C5 Vette - and I'm not sure if there's much in it between a TT and a Z06 - perhaps Zeo could shed some light on that but I'm under the impression that there's not a lot in it off the line.

It's funny he says that. Just clueless I guess. The funny thing is, for the kind of street light racing they're discussing, a C4 is slower than the "regular" Carrera. haha

One other comment. The urge to 'race' you is greater b/c you have the paper plates. When you have regular plates and people don't think the car is new to you, they won't mess w/ you as much.
I rarely have ridiculous cars like Civics want to challenge.

Here's my routine when I'm sitting next to someone with that RACE look in their eyes.
I get their attention and ask them if they want to trade and then start laughing.
They usually start laughing and tell me that I'm driving their dream car, etc.
Then I'll tell them that I had a car like theirs and a guy in a Porsche asked if I wanted to trade and thats how I got the Porsche.
I always have fun with that.
Ciao
