Anybody using a coilover besides PSS9?

Just looking at my options. Going to change the suspension out.

I know there are tons available now.

PSS9
H&R
Tein
D2
JIC

All these are available for around 2K dollars. Anyone tried anything besides the PSS9.

I am actually kind of intrigued by the D2 coilovers. Tons of adjustment including camber plates. All for a decent price.

D2 Racing RS Coilover System Porsche 996 C2 1999+

The RS coilover system is a 36 way dampner and rebound adjustable monotube full coilover system. The setup has seperate height and preload adjustments allowing for optimal adjustment and allowing full strut travel at all times along with pillowball upper mounts or top mounts, on most applications . Mounts are constructed of 6061 powder coated aluminum. Threads are teflon coated to prevent rust. Rebuildable and serviceable in the US.

Includes Front Camber Plate and Rear Top Mount.

Ive heard, and do not know if this has any merit, that sometimes PSS9s have issues with banging due to lack of travel when lowered???

Im also looking for a new setup for my C4S. I track my car at every DE I can and use it 2 or 3 days a week.

Heya Dog,

Depends on what and where you use the car? The JICs are pretty darn good on the C2 in terms of more of a "track" set up... PSS9s are great but pretty soft on the track. Never used/tried the D2s. I've never been a fan of the "hardware" that Tein uses on either the Supra, EVO or WRX so I'd stay away. We take of at least a couple of sets of H&Rs every month and replace them with PSS9s or JICs or Motons... Those cars never feel balanced and pogo all over the place.

i'm not a track star by any means. mostly some hard street driving and maybe a DE event or two in the future. i really want to try sebring out as it's not too far from the house.

i can't have the ride too rough either as the wife drives the car too. so essentially i need something adjustable, not too race oriented (harsh ride on the street), with no quirks.
what would you recommend?

i don't know why, but i'm kind of drawn to that D2 suspension. I do like the idea that they have a north american division here in CA and that they have a racing division as well.

it's a shame ground control doesn't do anything with porsche. i had their coilovers in my 330 and they were fantastic.

then get the ROW M030 I had it on my previous 996 which was daily driver it was a great balance between stiff and comfort. Car handled well during aggressive driving but still not teeth jarring. You will find that difference is night and day.

what is the drop with the ROW over stock. i've got springs on there now and it dropped it about 1.5 inches. it looks perfect at that height.

NOT YET, HOPEFULLY TOMORROW. SHAWN WAS OUT FRI.

I was thinking PSS9s. Ive read other threads, they seam to be favorite even with ROW owners looking to switch. Was worried about bumping into stops, but at 1.5 drop was told should be ok.

listen to sharkey, he knows what he's doing. moton is tough for street use. PSS9 is great for street and occasional track abuse. Tein is just terrible POS. i got all htree and speak from experience.

ROW 030 doesn't really drop it much so it would actually be higher than you current height. X74 is an option, but I would go for the PSS9 since your car isn't porsche oem stuff anyway, just get sway bars to go with-it, don't just do the coil-overs.

Thanks for all the info guys. I guess you can't go wrong with the bilsteins.

i looked at the x74, but for the money, i'd rather do the coilovers. i figured i would try the coilovers first, then the sway bars. i'd prefer to do it progessively to get aquainted with the differences.

So nobody here has any experience with the D2's? I've seen them at a bunch of online stores for the 996's. I'm shocked nobody has tried them yet. They remind me of my ground controls. I have no idea why i'm obsessed with the D2's

are there any fitment issues with the bilsteins? i know a while back (couple years) there were issues with euro vs us kits and some problems getting them to fit right. i'm assuming that has gone away? is there a problem with the bump stop at a 1.5" drop. I wouldn't go any lower than that. I had heard that it can be easy to hit the stops with the bilsteins.

i'm suprised there isn't more love for the H&R's on here. only one positive response. I asked two local installers and they both said H&R. i don't doubt sharky as he's doing suspensions all the time. i just figured H&R to be a quality well sorted product.

Don't forget about sway bars. My PSS9's were great, but turned super when I changed to a set of gt3 swaybars.

With the adjustablity of both you can dial your car in for whatever driving you do.

A friend has a gt3 and my car is better (smoother) on the street and I believe handles better on the track/autoX.

I read about the adjustablity of the shocks you're considering. 32 way adjustable is too much. Unless that's for seperate rebound and dampening the difference will be so minute it won't matter.

Believe me 9 way adjustable with 4 or 5 way on the sways will keep you busy getting it dialed in.

I run Yokohama A-009 slicks on the track and the car really hooks up. I do lift a wheel in tight fast turns, but the car is fast. If I didn't autoX so much I'd up the spring rates by 10% or so.

Another shock to try is Leda. I had a set of remote resevoir, double adjustable, nitrogen filled on my 944Turbo. They were the best shocks I've ever driven on. I think they make a set for the 996. Carl Poetle at Racers Edge is the man - call him if you're going to consider them. He'll make sure you get the right stuff.

DD,
I went with the Ledas on my 944s2 and loved them. I can put you in contact with Karl if you want to look into them.

Anybody done a set of Leda's on a 996? I just want to make sure whatever I get fits right and doesn't make any noise.

Is Leda Swedish? For some reason I thought Leda was related to Ohlins (motorcycle suspension gurus).
