996 Lap time on Nurenburgring......?
996 Lap time on Nurenburgring......?
Does anyone have any information as to what modded 3.6L 996's are capable of on the "ring." (and other known tracks in germany and locally even)
They have a time of 8:17 listed for what appears to be a stock 996 C2 on the "ring" (not even sure if its 3.4 or 3.6L...i think its the 3.6L 02-up thou)
...but if that car's suspension was/is ANYTHING like mine (which is stock U.S. spec) then that thing was squating, diving, and rolling and floating like a ballerina! ROFL!! The stock U.S. spec suspension is ridiculous for a performance car IMO and doesn't work the potential of the 02+ 996 chassis AT ALL! I always wondered "how much" of a difference an X74 equipped 996 C2 would be on the ring. There's a *HUGE* difference between a stock 996 suspension and porsche's own track tuned all-out for the street X74 set-up. My predictions are over 6-or-7 seconds on a lap as long as that... (maybe more)

I agree the stock suspension on a 996 has a lot to be desired. I recently installed the X74 and the difference is like night and day. I only drive on the street but I do drive it hard...very hard at times and appreciate the greatly improved performance of the X74...It now sites about 1 1/4 inch lower and handles like a 996 should....

I have the Porsche sport tuned chasis. My suspension seems fine and communicative, a bit harsh at times, but I enjoy it.
The X73 is the maximum sport/competition suspension porsche makes or sells for the C4S/TT, consists of new shocks, struts, springs and motor mounts. Lowers the car 30mm, handles like a ***** on the track, awsome.
The X74 is the nb equivelant for '02 and later cars, shocks, struts, swaybars and motor mounts.
You probably have the 030 sport suspension, very good on it's own. Comes in US and RoW spec(ride ht).

Eventually, all I will want to do to my car's suspension is add H&R springs for a lower stance (-1" all around).

Just be careful doing that with stock shocks as the ride ht is less, and you might(will) bottom out the shocks(internal and external bumpstops) and experience bump steer during high speed cornering. This is a real problem, and why the factory changes the shocks and springs when 'lowering'(RoW spec) 996s'.

I know that changing springs too would be the best bet. However, my wallet does not agree at the moment.
Eventually, I'll have adjustable shocks on my car.
I agree the X74/X73 kits are the best suspension out there for the 996's. Tuned perfectly straight from the factory. No need for adjustment. I personally feel adjustable set-ups (PSS9's, JRZ's, etc..) are in most cases not as well suited for a street/track car as most owners aren't experts at "dialing in suspension set-ups for given tracks / conditions" where the slight advantage of those set-ups are found. In fact, if they're not perfectly set-up by an expert you're actually going to get lower performance than an X74/73 set-up which is already perfectly tuned from *porsche* (with only a SLIGHT compromise from the fact its still for road going car)

...which is why I'm so curious as to how well a light 996 C2 would do (X74 equipped on the ring....)

About two weeks ago I took 2001 996 RUF with 420 hp on the ring and have completed a lap a slight slower than a Carrera GT. If I remember correctly, I did it in 7.58 minutes.
I'm thinking of doing it again this weekend.
Oh, I didn't mention that I did it on my Play Station 2, on the game GT4.
Eventually I'll make it to the famous "Ring" and run numerous laps. For now, I just keep on dreaming.

GT4 on PS2 has changed the world.
I had to spend most of my free time and all my spending money for several years on trips to Germany to learn that track! :-)
This was in the eighties, and eventually I was cured from the bug.
Or so I thought. After staying away for about ten years I returned to Nürburgring last fall "just for a few laps" in the 996. I`m going back this spring!!!
And yes, I have a PS2 with GT4. The children´s, of course...
