Question about Cab Top

Is the top supposed to close all the way on it's own or do you always have to pull it in that last little bit manually.

The cab top on the 996 is all automatic. The only thing you have to keep pressed is the button on the dash that closes/opens it! You can also be rolling up to 25mph when you open/close it! A real treat to see it close too. Those Germans are great engineers!

Only when it is new do you have to pull it a little bit...it will stretch eventually if you leave it on and closed for a while

Is this a new thing? I had an o2 cab, that you had to have the trans in P {tip} and the e-brake on. I knew the euro models could be operated while driven, But I didn't know that was here yet. Interesting, I don't think I would want to operate my top at 25 mph even if I could.

I have an 03 cab. I'm not sure when the rolling actuation became possible. I thought that all 996's had the same functionality. My bad! But let me tell you, having the ability to drive and put the top up/down makes a big difference. My budy has an M3 Cab and he has to be in park and have the E-Brake pulled before his will start to open or close. Eventhough it take only 20 sec to fully open and close when you've got folks behind you at a red light it no fun if you have to stay in park to close the top!!

I also do remember that when I first picked up the car that it did require a little push for the first few weeks to get it to close. But after keeping it closed overnight for a week or so it closed no prob!

Good luck! The Cabs are great!!

Thanks guys you have answered my question. The 04s are supposed to be able to open/close their top at speeds lower than 30mph. Mine is brand new and very tight but is getting looser, should be in usiness in a few days.

I was worried for a bit.

This is a new feature for 2003. I have openned and closed my top many times while riding near 25mph and it works just fine. It will not allow operation above the speed. I find its great when dropping the top at a traffic light which usually changes in the middle of the closing, or on an interstate where I am stopped in bumper to bumper traffic.

If you have a pre-03 6 spd, there is a hack, not sure if it works for the tip. If you find the harness for the top motor and clip the grey/pink wire, that is was sends your speed to the motor. Clip this wire, and the mechanism reads that you are not moving. Then all you need to do is pull the ebrake one click (which doesn't activate it) and voila, tops goes up and down while in motion. Takes less than 5 minutes to do. There is probably a way to override the ebrake too, but I like it as a fail safe, so some unwitting passenger does hit to button while you're doing 60 mph...

I don't know about doing that hack on the pre-03 cabs... I have an '02 cab and Porsche told me that there's a reason that you should not try to bypass the e-brake. The reason being that the frame on the cab top for pre-03 cabs has a very large folding radius, therefore, it would stick up above what's considered a safe amount to prevent it from blowing off while driving, even at speeds below 30 mph. That's why I haven't done this hack yet. I could be wrong about this since I really haven't watched an '03 or '04 cab with the top functioning.

Did the hack about a year ago...no adverse effects yet...granted, I don't usually take the top down anywhere near 30mph....but if you're in stop and go traffic, or at a light, the PITA of having to be completely stopped is gone...
However, there is NO difference between the 02 and 03+ tops, both have glass windows, etc....so that sounds like a load of crap...

You shouldn't have to touch the top at all, it is fully automatic.
