Second thoughts?
Second thoughts?
Did anyone have second thoughts after ordering their TT? I remain excited but a few things are gnawing at me frankly:
(a) Drove out to Southampton yesterday. Saw two 997TTs in the parking garage in downtown NYC (grey & white), two on 495 heading east (yellow and black) and one in Southampton (grey). I can't help to be moderately annoyed that for $135k I'm not getting something somewhat more 'exotic'. I accept they're popular because of their utility and performance versus, say, a Vantage but the uniqueness does suffer.
(b) A quick review of the CPO locator on Porsche.com revealed dozens available with low miles. The same review yielded less than 5 GT3s.
(c) A nicely equipped C4S for, let's say, $105k clearly isn't anywhere near as fast but is clearly fast "enough". Depreciation over 3 years would get that car to somewhere like $65k. 997TT after three years could sadly be in the same neighborhood if the crushing depreciation of 996s is anything to go by.
(d) Having spent a decent amount of time on 6speed and other forums it seems reasonably clear that the 997TT needs a set of mods to minimize some handling characteristics. The cost is low enough for springs and spacers but it does beg the question as to why they didn't manage to sort this from the Factory.
Net net, I'm excited for the car. But I do have a few concerns....

As a former 996 TT owner, I completely understand what you mean. The car needed a lot of mods to get close to what I truly wanted:
- Europipe II Loud Exhaust
- PSS9's
- 19" TechArt's
- Short Shift Kit
And after that I was "satisfied". Add up the dollars on those mods...well over 12K to make it "close" to a car that I was "satisfied" with...
Now, I look for cars that offer what I want in stock form. That's just my opinion. I am in no way saying that the TT is not a great car...it is fantastic in everyway. In white, that car is pretty killer...meteor as well....perhaps you should just give it a try and see what happens...

Granted 997TTs are not the most exotic looking cars out there but it's really about the driving experience more than anything else. I saw an Audi R8 yesterday and that thing is pure sex on wheels and looks like it's worth every penny but however the driving experience is completely different than a 997TT. The 997TT is a ROCKET on the road so keep that in mind.
The 997TT is a larvae stage supercar. It needs some time and tweaks to blossom into a total monster. Everything else is a fully matured never-will-be-a-supercar. The R8 and Gt3's are at last years performance bars. The 997TT (and most 911 TT's for that matter) can easily grow to future performance bars

It's a mass produced sports car - with over 100,000 997's made it's not going to stand out like you want it to, especially to the average person that can't even tell the difference between the models.
Here in LA they are dime a dozen unfortunately, though it's a testament to how great a sports car they are and the marketing that makes everyone and their mother (literally in LA) buy one.
Good luck with the car, it's the every day supercar and i'm sure you'll love it.
Josh.

All totally fair comments. Appreciate it. I think I had mild indicision this morning as my employer managed to write off $3.5 billion this week. Oops.

I would not get a $105K C4s, it's dangerously close to the TT price point, but without the quality content. A mass produced integrated (WET) sump throw away engine for nearly the same money, or at least pretty damn close- no thanks! I would definitely get a GT3 before I spent >$100K on a M96 based car.
You are lucky to live in an affluent location that you see 997TTs daily, I maybe see 2-3 a week even in Houston. And don't worrry about the so called handling issues, they are easily remedied by an alignment- if they even exist at all.

Absolutely no regrets for me.
The way I look at it purchasing a 997TT is that it is, by its nature, an irrational purchase. Nonetheless, there is no other car in its price range that gives me the breadth of driving uses as the TT...from ripping around a track to putting my son in the back seat to drop him off at school.
Plus, with Porsche's build quality, easy access to service if necessary, daily driver luxuries, easy access to mods, etc it becomes even easier to justify.
It really is an everyday supercar.
If I was looking at Porsche alternative, I would get a loaded C2S (X51 probably). I prefer RWD driving characteristics and don't see any real advantages with the C4S...just my 2 cents.

I guess there are always doubts about spending this kind of money. But, like someone said it is a mass-produced car.
As far as all the TT you saw. I'm in the same area as you and not counting a few memebers here whose car's i've seen I think I've seen 2 997TT since the car came out!! I know they're out there but I never see them!
As far as them not being exotic enough I have been blown away by the amount of comments, thumbs up, honking horns etc. the car receives. I never got a look with my 997S so I guess there is a difference that people notice.
Funny story but drove down to Phila last night with my wife to see Springsteen (I debtated about taking the TT but figured the crowd going to see Bruce is old enough that I wouldn't have to worry about it - also got a great "end" spot in the lot). We got there a few hours early to tail gate and again can't count how many comments people made as they walked by. The first time some guy walked by and muttered "beautiful".
My wife got this weird, embarrassed look on her face for a second and I said "you thought he was talking about you?!" LOL.

That's part of the appeal of the TT for me. It doesn't cry out and say, "HEY LOOK AT ME"! 997's are pretty common in Houston so the TT doesn't turn many heads, which in my opinion is a good thing. If you want attention, get a Ferrari, or Lambo.
