What do you think? I am not to sure I like the looks of it, I thought it would have a more aggressive look.

My thoughts exactly. I was expecting a little more out of the paddle/buttons too. I guess it doesn't really matter since I would buy the 6speed anyways.

 

Bad integration, but Im sure all of this will be addressed in the next major 911 update. No sense on spending too much money for a small update to the existing 997.

So much for the 998 being blessed with F-1 style paddles like the Ferrari and Lambo. MAJOR disappointment. Maybe Porsche will listen and install paddles prior to finishing the design of the 998TT.

Amazing some of the comments from people who haven't even driven a PDK equipped car.

jlingk - as a current tip owner, with over 12,700 miles on my car, I can tell you that the buttons are NOT as ergonomically efficient or as satisfying to use (from a performance perspective) as a paddle system (on say an F430 or Gallardo). You are 100% correct that the looks are irrelevant and immaterial (at least to me). However, unless you have some serious seat time with the current 997TT tip button system I would respectfully state that paddles are the preferred method to shift - but again, that's just my opinion. Furthermore, if I want to really drop the hammer, I don't even use the buttons, but keep the tranny in drive. The buttons suck that badly for really spirited driving.

 

tortesq1...that is upsetting to hear, but thanks for your honesty. I test drove a 997tt and the tip was not fun to shift manually. Just not what "I" wanted. I wanted an audi dsg kind of thing.......

I have a 996tt manual that I love and if I moved up I had considered the PDK as an option...we will have to wait for the 998....as I agree, in a car of this caliber, anything less than full paddles a la Ferrari is a waste of time. Huge hole for a good aftermarket option of course....

Maybe they are saving the paddles for the 997TT model or something more race oriented like a GT3 with paddles?

Just doesnt make sense that they wouldn't use paddles unless they are saving it for some future model.

But I agree paddles are definitely more fun, more satisfying than buttons, and you don't have to worry about inadvertently shifting during a spirited drive.

 

I'm sure someone will make a after market steering wheel for it with paddles. I think techart has one for tiptronic.

My last TT was an 03 X50 6speed and it was 10X more fun than the 997TT. That being said, my 997 tip is substantially easier to drive very fast - no missed shifts, no powerband issues, etc.

 

I think that Porsche probably wanted to keep the design in line with tiptronic. From a marketing standpoint, it makes sense to blend dual clutch systems in with automatics because it keeps the allure of their smoothness and ease of operation. The market that Porsche has to appeal to is very broad and somewhat different from the likes of ferrari and maybe even bmw. F1 style paddles might actually detract from the aesthetics and look a little bit daunting to some of Porsche's potential buyers. Not to mention, it actually looks great from a design standpoint. It seams very pleasing to the eye and well integrated into the rest of the interior. I think it's great and I know better than to judge a transmission souly on its type of gear actuator.
