Fuel light

Approximately (or exactly) how much fuel is in the tank once the light turns on?

That is only true if you are still on stock injectors, which I think you are right?

Well, the light was on for a few miles. Didn't want to tempt fate and have the car die in the middle of the road. So, I filled her up with 91 just to see how much was left in the tank.

11.98 gallons WTF? 17.7 gal tank capacity. So there was close to 6 gallons (i.e. 1/3 of a tank) left in there. Boy, that light is VERY inaccurate.

What did the gauge indicate when the light came on?

Ah. Hovering right over/slightly above the light. I supposed if you consider that the light is where the 2nd tick should be, around 4-5 gallons in the tank would be about right. But where do they get 2.6 gal from??

Thanks Ed for the useful info. I used to carry a 5 gal can of ms109 when I was driving down the tank of 91. Even when the needle bottomed out it kept going. It seemed like it could go forever. It's good to know how much is actually in there when the light comes on.

Dave, even when the light goes off, my guess is there's probably a variability of anywhere from 2-4 gallons. The estimated range with the light on was about 48-50 miles. That certainly translates into a lot less than 6 gallons. Upshot is that the fuel light and/or range meter is pretty worthless

My hope was that it would be a bit more accurate for the purposes of mixing fuel. Although I'm tuned for 94, I'd like to aim for 96 as a safety net. With a 5 gallon pail, that translates into mixing in 9 gallons of 91. But without knowing how much is truly in the tank, I may just have to run it down as far as possible and add just the 109. Kind of a waste. Either that, or siphon out the remainder of the tank, add 109, and then hit the pump (inconvenient to say the least).

Yeah, it's a guessing game unless you keep driving around your block until you run out of gas. Then your neighbors think your strange but they probably do already.
