Rain & Shine at LS with RE-11s
You sure seem to be having fun at the track. Especially with the new Ohlins setup? Congrats.

LOL...!!!! You just need to drive your car more!
The Ohlins seem to be working magic. Although as I mentioned, I'm just scratching the surface with what they can offer as far as performance and decreasing lap times. The car is going back in for its third alignment next week since the install. Keep in mind every time I have tweaked the alignment, improvements have been realized.
I'll be down in your neck of the woods April 14th & 15th (BW). Should be fun...first time for me there....

Cheers,
VID
PS: THANKS!

To add to VID's enthusiasm for the RE-11, below is E55AMG's comparison of Michelin PSS vs. Bridestone RE-11. *Not* coincidentally perhaps, Chris/E55AMG is also a track "junkie" like VID (a complement :-), I enjoy greatly their infectious enthusiasm for the track) and therefore has plenty of experience with tire and its importance in suspension tuning.
I believe what it comes down to is that the RE-11 has similar dry traction to PSS, but a notch stiffer sidewall. The stiffer sidewall is what makes it more desireable for track junkies and auto-crossers. Less weight transfer = less comfort but faster car. I currently have PSS and do plan to give RE-11 a try next.

just removed my RE-11's and put on PSS. Have about 500 miles on the PSS and I want my RE-11's back
One of the things that I always found a bit amusing was when people would write a tire review and start by saying "...my tire x was down to the cords so I put new tires on - these new tires are fantastic". Well, at that point, anything round and made of rubber will feel better LOL.
Not wanting to do this, I removed the RE-11 with quite a bit of tread left so it would be a better comparison.
I don't pretend to be an expert racer, nor an expert in rubber compounds; this is just one man's opinion.
Before mounting the RE-11 I had PS2 and the original RE050A's that came with the car. I found the RE-11 to be better than the PS2 in pretty much every way. Even wet grip was comparable - i don't drive like a nut in the rain so can't really say this for sure. Was also pleasantly surprised at how they behaved in the cold during the winter.
The PSS is clearly superior to the RE-11 in the noise / comfort dept. they're almost too comfy. it feels as though the car is just not as sharp.
I haven't had it on the track yet, but i've done all the roads/curves i'm very familiar with. no doubt the dry grip is not up to the RE-11. turns at the same speeds do not give the same sense of confidence that i got with the RE-11's. In fact, i'm probably down a few mph in most of the turns on my usual "circuit".
I think this is a similar analysis to what can was saying regarding R-comps vs. street tires. The RE-11 is not an R-comp but is in the extreme category.
My car is not my DD so I'm not concerned as much with noise/comfort. If you DD the car and looking for a great street tire, you'll be very happy with the PSS. If you've used R-Comps, RE-11, etc. and like them, you may not love the PSS.

Very nice driving in the above videos!!
GoPoint's $99 BT1 OBD reader will give you accurate data (speed, rpm, gear, throttle) that'll overlay in HLT. And it's bluetooth so no more cables
For another $99, you can add bluetooth GPS at 5 Hz, ie, Dual 150, instead of the lousy 1 Hz in the iP5. The position data is way better and you'll trace smooth lines on the track overlay. See this video for a comparison and note the difference in calculated speeds
(of course, the OBD eliminates the need to calc the speed based on GPS).

Cannga, Thanks for the kind words. I definitely have tried my fair share of tires! I do agree with you regarding road noise with the RE-11's. However, my exhaust pretty much drowns out all the road noise

I have noticed on certain sections of freeways, when cruising in 5th or 6th gear they do tend to howl. You can always turn up the stereo and rock to the beat! LOL!!!!
I still would like to try R888's, but I think I'll wait until I can get another set of rims, so I can pick and choose which tires I'd like to drive to an event when I cannot get transportation for the R6's. Meanwhile the RE-11's will continue to be my daily mounts.
DASAMS: Thank you! Also, thank you for your input/post and video analysis. Nice job!
I'll have to get EH to get this system all setup and tested...then he can set me up! I hate having to figure all this kind of stuff out on my own, plus I can never remember how to use it.

Kidding aside - did the RE 11 howl when it was new as well, or is it only when it's older? I've noticed the same with R comp Pirelli Corsa in my car; noise was ok at first but deafening towards the end when tire was well worn.
^^^ Cannga,
Sorry for the delayed response. Been busy with work, travel, tracking, and alignment tweaking! After spending a weekend down south, looks like the car will go back in for alignment number FOUR!
BW is such a dust bowl and the number of people going off track is just plain off the charts. I will say, some of the local track rats from SolCal are incredibly fast there. The rest just need to realize where their limits lie.
My eyes are still blood shot and my sinuses feel like I just spent a week in Mexico pre running the 500 in a open buggy.
Regarding the "howl" I really only notice it on the sections of freeway that have all the combed or corduroy grooves cut in them or the older sections of concrete slabs with larger then normal aggregate. As far as the road noise being deafening by the end of the tread life, absolutely. However, this happens over time and I never really realize just how loud they become until I put some fresh rubber on.

^^^ 34 Front & Rear HOT....so the tricky part is getting your "cold" pressures correct. Typically I only need to have my fronts 1 to 2 psi lower then my rears when cold...to target for 34 hot...running a 20-30 minute session. Although, before I really started pushing my car hard, I was using a 2-4 psi difference front to rear. Again, weather & ambient temperatures have to be factored in.
I try to run my RE-11's at 32f, 35r HOT at the track. I generally start the first session at 25-26 cold and adjust as needed at the end of the session.
I just dug out my alignment specs from Evoms which were:
Front, Rear
Camber -2d 03', -3d 10'
Toe 0.00, +0d 15'
Setback +0d 12', +0d 04'
Everybody seems to find this setup "interesting" but it seems to work really well with H&R sways set to medium. The 3d in the rear is intended to maximize the contact patch while cornering and putting down 750+hp coming out of them. I still need softer tires and will likely go with R-888's on dedicated wheels in a month or two.
Currently I'm waiting for the snow to stop so I can get the car to Denver where a GMG rear roll cage, GT3 seats and 6pt harnesses await installation. I'm also having stainless steel brake lines installed and some titanium shims put in between the pads and calipers which should reduce heat transfer to the fluid. Then it's on to Road America for a 3 day DE over Memorial Day weekend!
Finally, did you guys happen to catch this......http://flatsixes.com/cars/tuned-pors...tar-half-mile/

Buttonwillow Aftermath: This is what my car looked like today in the garage after two days of "on track" action at BW, plus the drive down and back up to SJ. I spent over two hours vacuuming out the interior. I can't even imagine what the cars must look like that had "offs"!. Don't think our club had any off on Monday, but SV probably had 5-10 a session, per run group! Crazy....what a dust bowl down there.
Enjoy your weekend!

Your Turbo is, if not already so, clearly on the way to becoming one of the most well sorted out track cars I've come across. I've enjoyed following the very systematic and progressive approach to suspension tuning. Keep us updated with your "adventure."
